  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1971 250 - Bing54 Carb replacement and electronic ignition

My 1971 is going to get used, so I'd like to address the carb and the points.

The Lectron is too much carb for my needs, so it appears the conventional wisdom is a 36mm Mikuni, which I'm familiar with from my XS650. I've been looking to see any other associated mods that this carb swap needs, and it looks limited to the intake and airbox. Has anyone produced any kits, or does everyone roll their own mods to make the Mikuni fit ?

Second is I'm looking to swap out the points for an electronic ignition. I have no history with Husky's so I'm just blind searching forums and vendors. I've been steered towards a Belgian outfit called HPI, but they don't have anything for my specific model. Just wanted to check if there is any consensus on electronic ignition for these old girls ?

Thanks in advance.

Chuck at Huskyjunk looks to have the goods ( with a little fab ) for the Mikuni carb. Got back to me straight away on fitment changes for the 1971 vs the 1972 and up it's listed for.

Emailed Electrex, Vape and PVL for the electronic ignition. None list the 1971, so asking them all if they have something suitable

Sorry I can't chime in with useful info for you. I'm still running the Femsa mag with a Bing 54 carb on my 400. But looking forward to seeing your progress with the bike.

Just an update. About to order the carb from Husky Junk. Very responsive. Happy to ship to the UK, and will jet it for my elevation.
Vape also very responsive. Had some questions on my Husky, and the current setup ( various measurements ) and confirmed which product of theirs was appropriate.
No responses from Electrex or HPI. I'm going to call both today, but almost certainly going with the Vape.

Also committed to an engine rebuild, and taking it out to second oversize. Looking at Vintco for all the internals, but also a few local guys who do MX rebuilds all the time have local suppliers that might have appropriate pistons, conrods, bearings etc.

So my original plan to just get it running, and ride it, are out of the window. It's ever thus :)

Good shout to go with Vape. Mine run Power Dynamo which is now Vape. Excellent at communicating and their product is great. I have not had any luck with Electrex. They couldn't even bother to get back to me when I had a question, and even less when it went belly up ! Not used HPI so can't comment.
Good luck with the build. Be nice to see another classic racing.

Can you post the part number of the Vape ignition you’re using? I have a 1971 250 (MI chassis) that I want to get running.
thanks
