• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1982 430 will not shift past 2nd gear

AA Class
Hi all,
After sitting for a year, my XC-430 will not shift past 2nd gear. Any of they wise sages here know where to start?

Mine won’t go past 3rd gear. Had it apart several times but not solved. Engines been sitting on my bench for about 4 years....Lost the will to fix it!

Check the shift links for broken springs, make sure shift shaft is not bent, and always verify the transmission shifts normally before assembling the right centercase. That will save you the grief of removing the engine again.

Also check the transmission gears to ensure the gears that slide actually slide and are not jammed by congealed oil or something.

try putting a light oil like atf - f in it and running it first. seems strange if its been running fine and you havent done anything to it that it would stop shifting. If that does nothing, i would then lay it down on its side and pop the clutch cover off (no need to remove the shifter or kicker) and check the detent spring is sitting over the post and that the shift forks springs are intact. (you may have to lift the clutch off to see these). while your there, you may as well replace the little needle rollers on the kicker and idler shafts for peace of mind. (get a new gasket as well). if thats doesnt cure it there must be an issue internally as stated above.

you havent mixed cases with that one Pez? a non match case set case can cause all sorts of wierd issues. speak to Mick Hughes..he knows all about it.

One other thing to check, if the wrong (too small) washer is used on the end of the shift drum, the pins can fall out.

Other than that, I think everyone has covered the most likely causes, make sure your ratchet arm and detent arms move freely, one of mine had chewed up the spacer and gave problems.

Check that your gear lever moves freely in the clutch cover while you have it off, they can gum up and bind from sitting too.

The small spring on the detent arms can also stretch, still available new and cheap from any Husky dealer.
Memory tells me I paid $13AUD (about $10USD) for the one I bought earlier this year.

The only other long shot, I discovered that the return spring in one of my bikes had been "improved" by a PO, the gap between the two spring arms was too great, rather than try to bend them, I used a good unmolested one and it now shifts great.
As surprize said, it is odd that this has occurred with no changes to the bike, even unlikely that it could be a mechanical failure, more like something has "gummed up" from lack of use.
Tony.

If you find that you need any of these parts, I believe that they were still used in four stroke Huskies until the last of the left kick bikes, 2004?

That slotted shifter lever with the spring on the right needs to be vertical so the pin on the clutch cover can make the shifter cog on the drum return to the central position after shifting.

The spring needs to be vertical in that notch in the case.

Mr. Brown, it looks like your swingarm is making contact with the engine cases in the first pic.

That's entirely possible/probable, when that pic was taken I was unaware that my rear case sleeves had around 5mm of play allowing the engine to move in the frame. There is no contact now thankfully.
Tony.
