• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1982 CR 430 Rebuild

The crack can be welded with a TIG. No special process other than a very good cleaning. The main problem in getting this done is finding the welding rods at a reasonable price. Welding supply stores want you to buy a package of rods and they are VERY expensive.

Thanks for the feedback chaps...I'm going to try and get it welded by a specialist welder later in the week...I'll let you know if it works, or whether I'm looking for new cases.

steve i know its magnesium but can it be welded?... the welder has do a special process because magnesium produce its own oxygen and even supports combustion under water!. seem to remember the works bsa frames of jeff smith were some sort of magnesium.
I think you are speaking of titanium. Magnesium tubing if existing would be too fragile for a frame.

thanks jimspac....yes titanium it was...just off topic a bit i think the works euro cz team around 73/74 used 5 spoke magnesium/alloy wheels, they were strong but did not have enough give like spoked wheels....bet there are still some lying around somewhere !

Whilst we are off topic...I was at Dodington park near Bristol 1974 British round of the world GPs when one of the Russian guys Genardy Moissiev stapped his titanium frame of his works KTM on the down hill steps. The FIM banned titanium after that episode.

Got the frame back from the powder coaters over the weekend and I'm not sure of the silver...?? It looks a bit grey to me which is fine if it was one of the early 70's Huskies as the colour matches fine. What do you think ?

Reactions: fix
If it were me I would do some sums then either ride it or send it off to R&D Cox in Reading who will blast it and two pack polyurethane as silver as you like it. Great finish and tougher. My next frame is going that route, the blasting on my Husky was quite aggressive and the powder coating looks a little thin. Tricky one though.................

In the States getting the cases weld is a bit of a hassel but can be done. I got a replacement lower end for my 430CR,
and not only did someone fix a crack but they ran a rib down the back side to re-enforce it, see if you can have the same done. Bike looks awesome.

The case is going to be welded sometime later this week. I've discussed doing as you suggested with the rib. I'm also fitting a "billet" outer casing that has an additional lug and the web design is different, so hopefully the whole area around the kick start is going to be stronger.

Now I've started re-building I've realised who much I should have been doing over the winter...!!

I've got the old Nordisk 21" and 17" rims to be built using the original hubs. The previous owner took the rims off and used bling gold excel "Takasago" Jap ones...he's since been shown the error of his ways....:banghead: I need to locate some new spokes (preferably this side of the pond) for the 17" rear wheel.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm now fighting the urge to paint the fork legs gold (as standard) as I like the works bare paint finish I've already got.

The engine is now finally re-built with thanks to my old dad for assisting with the gearbox. I was a bit miffed that the so called '82 CR 430 Gearbox I got from across the pond on Fleabay turned out to be from an '83 WR/XC 430, which meant I had to use a lot of the old gears. I have learnt my llesson and will ask for gear numbers next
time...:banghead:

The piece of wood is only to protect the frame by the way...not some sort of environmentally friendly engine mount as my mate asked...:)

Nice! Got a new extra long gear lever from Hva that you could have knock down if you like?
