  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1983 XC500

Maybe I am asking the wrong questions. All the pics I see of the 83 bikes have different rims, some gold, some kinda off gold and some silver. What were the rim colors for the original rims? Mine are like milky, worn out plating, I'm not sure how to describe the color. I'll take pic tomorrow. What do you think. Chris

Really? I've never seen a husky with a tach. Unless this coil is not from a husky.
i havent either..but ive seen several motoplats like that, and some have come on running huskies..ive always wondered about doing it, a round tach mounted behind the numberplate would be pretty sweet.

I saw the same when I investigated, 2 stroke black and 4 stroke red, mostly carting. I am glad the pin was identified and that now we know there are tachs for them. I don't think looking down at a tach when you are on the pipe on a 500 would be something I could do!!

The light dull gold is the correct color for an 83.
My rims have that in spades, I am going to clean them up and tighten the spokes (they are all loose) then we'll see what the damage is. Thanks for the info. Chris

Not to beat the tach issue too much - here is some further info:

The third terminal is usually labeled with TACOMETRO - letters are really small:

"ive always wondered about doing it, a round tach mounted behind the numberplate would be pretty sweet."

Intriguing idea Justintendo - how about using a 70's electronic tach from an OSSA, Bultaco, Montesa or mini modern (off eBay / others)?:

And last - more colors, more decisions!

Got the seat pan cleaned and painted, those rusty little staples were EVERYWHERE! I think this will be the 3rd cover on this pan. It's in ok condition so it should last for a while. New cover and foam from Phil, and I bought ss staples to re attach the cover. Also got this in the mail today, much nicer that I thought it would be.

Got the seat done. My very first! Got the chain and sprockets on, got the kill switch wire sheathed. Cleaned and painted the front fender, ordered a new rear fender and a tail light pc from Phil. Phil says the side panels are 6 weeks out, and I'll get the headlight and plate form him as well. So it's moving along slowly but it runs!

Got the panels and decals, hung them on the bike. Looks like the left panel will need some heat to fall correctly. Painted the tank and added decals then clear. Paint and decals are not my day job so this is the best I can get it. Looks good from 10'!

So the 500 is almost done.:applause: Just some bolts for the rear fender and hand and foot brake switches and bar control switch for the lights, then wiring. I was bombing down the tracks trying to get a feeling for the power band while on the pipe and suddenly nothing. Like the ignition dropped out.:censored: Checked and plenty of fuel, did some static spark test NG. Gotta pull it all apart and retest everything in the ignition. This is getting tiresome!
