• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1986 400 Xc Rebuild

Thats interesting about the clutch Dave, i have a limp wristed clutch on my wr but it works fine so i have never bothered to stress about it.

its very light and strong and very unhusky like in that it doesnt drag.

I have been using ATF-F in the box and it works ok as wel

Don't worry I have been watching the bike on E-bay I might contact the seller if it does not sell.

I have just recently bought a 2001 TE 570 from a guy in Inglewood, Victoria by the name of Andrew Leech and am still sorting it out.

I was keen to have it, my first Husky Thumper it was a 1200 km round trip ( 745 miles ) to pick it up.

With the 400 I did go up one size on the counter shaft sprocket, a 15 tooth because I did a lot of long distance riding and a lot of street work and that probably put more strain on the clutch.

With oil the trick is to change it regularly, drop the oil after one days ride if it comes out really grey ( friction disc contamination ) your oil is not doing the job.

Cheers,
DaveM.

Your bike really brings back memories, I had my 86 WR400 for ten years still wish I had not sold it. It had so much grunt I was always first to the first corner whenever I raced it.

I used lots of different oil and you can tell if you are on the right track when you drop the oil and you have very little contamination from the aluminum friction discs in the clutch. With the oil for your bike I found that that 10w-40 diesel oil was the best and cheapest I used to change it after every ride.

The clutch in my bike always felt week I replaced everything including the clutch springs. The fix ended up being very simple I was told by Husky Imports Australia to add an extra friction disc to the clutch, it fixed the week feeling clutch. Extra friction disc goes in first.

In ten years I never changed the con rod, only replaced the piston once and only because I did not warm the bike up properly, slight seizure.

I rode that bike heaps and heaps, I even rode it to work every day for twelve months, who says Husky's aren't reliable.

Coming back from a race meet once in the mid nineties, I rode there and back a half hour ride both ways as well as racing it, four races. Three races in my class and the final a butcher's picnic (every size bike in the same race). Boy that was fun!

( This is a true story ) On the way back I saw one of the guys who raced broken down. He wanted to leave his bike on the side of the road in some bushes and I would dink him on the back. I said no way someone might steal it, I will tow you with my bike, he said you can't do that but I did! He was so happy not to have left his bike on the side of the road. This was in country South Australia I found some binder twine on the side of the road to make a tow rope.

I kept the tow rope for years and ended up towing another three bikes at different times.

Sorry for the long rant but I really loved that bike.

Cheers and Merry Christmas,
DaveM.

Cool stuff, good info on the clutch.

I have another 86 400 just for parts as I plan to ride the XC for 10 years or more. :)
Friends thought it was a relic, just cause they ride new bikes. I showed them this summer, been 20 years since i rode dirt bikes.
I was always got up the hills first and was leader of the pack lol. After 4 hours of trails they were done and I was ready for a bite to eat and go another 4.
In time they had all kinds of respect for my bike, as i could do 50 mph like nothing down rough trails sitting down.
All they could do is stand and work it hard to keep up. :)

In 1 season i burned 14 bottles of MC1+ so thats a ton of gas
Wore out 2 pairs of rear wheel bearings
1 pair front in the front.
Had to change pads 1/2 way into the season
wore off a front tire by the end
rear tire was done by 1/2 way in the season
started with all new stuff too
other than maintenance all i did is ride it.

Best Motor ever! Awesome Bikes

Forks are going on the 86 :)

Nice !!!
Good inspiration for me , I just love the 400:love: , I think it is the best engine put in these bikes.

In case I get the one I'm looking at ( decided to offer 1800 euro so I buy those rads with silicone and make it even 2000 euro ) ,
I will have many questions and will seek your advise.

Thanks
Petros

The 400 is my # 1 rider.

Super clean ! Almost air cooled beautiful... Last pic though, really well balanced looking bike, you just know it will ride as well as it looks. Yep, Husky envy.

Just caught up up with this thread, awsome job, did you make the water pump guards or did you buy them? would like a couple for my husky's, anyone know where I can get them?

Old husky products part, check out ebay 5 to 10 bucks
Thanks.
Ive just had a quick search and dont seem to be able find any. i would be greatful if anyone could send me a link (or just cut and paste the title) to me from the US
Thank you in advance.
PS sorry for going off topic (moderator's please feel free to move to the relevant section of the site)

Terafex !! ….Now that brings back memories…. Mounted one on the back of a Yam 175G (1980); About too much tire for a 175, but I didn’t weight hardly 120lbs at the time and needed all the traction I could get….

Great woods tire with indestructible performance…..

Cheers

Had it out, lovin the tire.

Had this bid on a 85 CR 250 flat side carb on ebay and got it for 35 bones and it came with a good throttle even.

Well i went threw it and gave it a good test in the back alley, sure feels good so far.
easy starts, quicker throttle response for sure in a few gears.
