  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2011 SM511 vs 2010 SM510 - Which to choose?? Guys who have seen/ridden both?

Currently have a 2008 SM510r with P/U kit, Arrow, IMS 3gal tank that I really enjoy. Like it so much in fact that I decided to chip in to get my buddy to buy one also. When looking for other used 2008s I realized there were some pretty big changes to the 09/10 models (largely EFI related) and then found a 2010 at $2500 off sticker so decided to get him that one. I also in the meantime sold my 2008 to another friend so we could all go riding and I need a new bike now so figure I'll get another 2010 at same deal.

Then I start reading about the 2011 SM511 and it seems there are again some pretty big changes to the motor. Not many magazine reviews yet (pls let me know if you have some links) but early rider reviews seem very positive.

I can get a 2011 SM511 for about $1500 more than the 2010. Both will need about $500 in exhaust mods / larger gas tanks - so that part is a wash. So for the guys who have seen / ridden both...would you pay $1500 more to be on the 2011 SM511??

Why do you automatically assume you need "exhaust mods"? Stock exhausts are awfully good. And quiet too. Quiet is the key to keep from losing more legal riding lands.

Hope to see the first SMR449/511 in the US in March/April.

The exhaust is pretty good until you get to the silencer, they are restrictive. I Imagine the Giant Hunk of metal hanging on the end of the 2011 exhaust is restrictive too. You can get the upgrades Akrapovich but it seems you'll have to pay a good chunk of extra money if you're buying in the US.

Thats what I have heard as well about the stock exhausts being quite restrictive and really being built for CA emmissions, not the other 49 states. I do agree about keeping things quiet when possible though. I will probably go for the 2010 afterall, but hope to upgrade to the 2011 in a year or two when the verdict is out regarding performance of the new block. Tough to make the call given no one has really driven a 2011 SM511 yet.

I rode my TE511 on the street Sat, did 56 miles. SM guys are going to LOVE this bike. Stable as all get out, handles like a dream and the amazing lack of engine braking is amazing. I had a pretty nice SM610 and this bike is WAY more fun, handles better and is probably faster to about 60.

This is a GREAT street mount...

Speaking of the lack of engine braking, for the street SM I look at that as a negative. Engine braking is like a 3rd brake that is very predictable on twisty roads. Chop the throttle in a timely manner and grab a handful coming through the turn and never touch the brakes. I guess it's a matter of preference. My Duc is the same way, so I'm accustomed to it.
