  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2011 TE449 Ride Report - Finally

ScottyR

Husqvarna
AA Class
I have had my TE449 for a while now but for one reason or another havent spent much, if any real time on the bike to make a fair assessment. I finally got out for a "real" ride on it on Sunday.

I can honestly say that the 449 is a really good bike. I was very impressed with the bike.

The suspension on the bike is too soft for my 210lbs carcass but other than some stiffer springs, the forks are staying stock. The rear is too soft for me but again I think a stiffer spring will fix it. I need to add some rebound damping and may play with the valving a little bit on the shock. The bike is definitely rideable for me but I have gotten myself used to running stiffer suspension the last couple of years and just find this bike squishy. 3yrs ago, I would have LOVED this suspension. The bike has really good rock suspension out of the crate.

I dont know what all the talk is about this bike not turning and the CTS wanting the bike to stand up in corners? The bike corners WAY better than an old TE450 and is as good as my 2010 Husaberg FE450. I dont know if it was just in my head but the CTS does seem to make this bike climb hills with ease. It seems to go up rocky hills without any fuss. Whether this is CTS related or not has yet to be determined... I am not sure but the bike doesnt seem to wheelie as easy as my Berg but it will wheely. You just need to think about it a bit more. Not a deal breaker for me.

The engine is excellent. It is very, very smooth. So smooth it feels slow, but it is anything but slow. This is an excellent WOODS motor. The shifter is too high but that is an easy adjustment. I hit neutral a few times that annoyed me. The stock 15/51 gearing is great for the bikes intended purpose as a dual sport but it is too tall IMO for real off road useage. I think that 14/50 might be a good combo for woods use. I do not care about top speed. As long as the bike will run 90km/h in 6th without revving the guts out of it, I am happy. I am kind of concerned with the EFI mapping. I have the power up kit with the Akrapovic muffler and the bike is a bit lean. The bike flamed out a few times on me.

The clutch has a nice feel and never thought about fading.

The fuel mileage seems really good. We rode 60kms of fast single track and I had lots of fuel left. My buddy with his CRF450X needed gas and couldnt go much further.

The chassis is really good. The seat is one of the most comfortable seats to come on a Euro bike. It still isnt a Honda seat, but it is way better than any Husky, Berg or KTM I have ridden before. The rear brake petal location was a huge issue on the BMW for me, but it is perfect on the Husky even with the bulge from the hyd clutch. I dont have any problems with the rear filling gas hole. The handlebars are in a perfect position for me. The pre-11 Huskys bars are way too high for me.

What really bugs me is how beat the bike looks after 1 ride. This bike desperately needs graphics to protect the plastic. The huge rad shrouds are scratched to sh-t after 1 ride. PG is making graphics for me already. This will fix this problem and give a bit of pizazz to the bike.

All and all, I am very impressed with this bike. My report may sound negative but it is anything but. I dont want to sound like I have been drinking the cool-aid. I am trying to be a realistic as possible and call a spade a spade. The bike is way better than a 1st year effort. It is a better bike than a 2011 KTM 450EXC no question. I have ridden both and the Husky is better.

The best review came from my buddy who was with me on Sunday. He owns a big Honda shop and hates euro bikes with a passion. He rode the 449 for quite a while and when we traded back his response was, "this isnt a big of a POS as I thought it would be....I kind of like it". Coming from my buddy, this response was a huge compliment as he normally goes off the deep end hating my bike.

Yep, great bike. All you have to do is ride on to figure it out. At 1400 pretty hard miles it is holding up VERY well. I agree with pretty much everything you said.

Scotty... I rode this bike at Glen Helen a month ago... actually two different 449's ....one with the big stock can and the other with the Akropovic. Which one do you have? The stock seemed much more mellow and the Akropovic hit a lot harder... everywhere... it felt more like the hit I get out of my TC450 with the ProCircuit TI4 on it.

Also rode the TE511 with the stock big can on it as well. Not impressed with it at all. Not what I expected. The 449's just feel better. The 511 felt like it was wallowing most of the time. Maybe the Akropovic makes a big difference on it as well.

IF I had to pick a bike for riding in the woods all day it would be the TE310... pure fun.

Cool report, I was waiting for something like this. I have a couple of questions.
Would you rather be on a 2T for tight stuff?
What makes it better than an EXC?
How for could you go on a tank if you were just out for a long easy DS ride?

Odd, we just had a 449 and 511 together for a day and they felt identical (save for user setup) with the 449 feeling slightly revier and the 511 feeling slightly stronger. Maybe it was suspension setup?

Kelly, you may be right . I don't beleive any of these bikes were dialed in for me on the suspension side...

I rode the the TE511 first. Pretty much the whole reason for me wanting to do the demo ride. This was also riding on my home turf of parts of the SRA GP MX track at Glen Helen....I'm very interested in the 511 .. being a big guy I was thinking that the 511 would just inherently be better for me. It "Felt" bigger and heavier especially up high for some reason. Maybe the fork tubes were to low for me.. and the sag defientely would need adjusted.... .it pulled the hills just fine.. don't get me wrong, but it didn't seem to do it with the ease of either of the 449's . At Glen Helen, I love my Husky TC450 because it is an absolute stable , planted tractor on the hills. I can make up time on the uphills .

Rode the TE310 next and loved it. Great bike but for my size it was working harder to pull me up the hills of GH. Would buy it in a minute regardless.

Next rode the TE449 with stock can. loved it... night and day better for me than the 511 . Could ride harder and push it more. Just seemed to float under me better... ? Suspension better dialed in on this specific bike..I don't know ?

then rode the TE449 with Akropovic... for four good fast laps right behind Brent Harden. This bike was the __ it! It quite simply ( for me) handled better ... seemed to rev and hit harder through the entire range. Very good for the course we were on. Handled teh braking bumps well , puleld the hills very well and soaked up all teh crap at high speed very well... very stable and felt planted. Not top heavy at all...

JMO assesment (for me) on a scale of 1 to 10 Riding at Glen Helen.
TE 310 = 8
TE 449 with stock exhaust = 7
Te 449 with Akropovic = 9
TE 511 with stock exhaust = 6

Would like to ride another 511 better dialed for me to change my mind......

Side note and slightly off the topic but I rode Weston Peicks ( AMA/ SuperCross CRF450 2009) practice bike at Milestone the other night .. what a dream bike for the track. Would love to ride a new TC now and see what it feels like.

I wonder what the 310 would be like with the exhaust and ecm from the hardparts catalog. More great info to confirm that the new 449/511 is a winner.

I would agree with what has been typed, especially these parts.

The bike corners WAY better than an old TE450..
