  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250 or 450? please give me your two cents.

I looked around to see if I could find some awnsers before I asked this question, but couldent. So, I have a 2004 TE 250 that granaded when the lower rod bearing went, takeing out two Ti valves the piston and the oil pump internals ( all new bearings needed). In doing my homework for parts I came accross a 2004 TC450 motor with very very low hours on it with the carb for about the same amount of money that it would take to fix the 250, so begane my quest for finding out if my ( 04 TE 250 six speed trans would work in a 04 TC 450 motor? ) I think it will.

Know to my maine question, WILL I LIKE THE 450 OVER THE 250? I love the 250 as is in the woods but suffer a little when out on the two tracks and fire roads with my friends with 450's. Doe's anyone have experance on both? I don't wont to reget putting in the 450 if it is going to be to much power in the woods, will I be holding on for dear life? is it going to kick my butt at the end of the day over the 250? Please give me your two cents.

You will notice the 450 will be more to handle and tougher to change directions than the 250, in the open stuff it depends on how long the straights are and up to what speeds- and how good a rider you are- if you find yourself trying to catch up in the straights Versus keeping speed through corners- the 450 will help. The power of the 450 is fun but in technical trails is simply more work than a 250. All that said- you can get used to a 450 in tight stuff just fine. Took some adjustment but I sold my "woods" bike cause my 09TE450 is "all that and a bag o' chips." - But more and more you see the smaller bores being bought up for technical stuff. I wish I could have it all but I cant. My 450 is a great compromise (for me).

I think you would like the 310 over both the 250 and 450. You should see what the cost of going with the 310 kit. I have had the TE 250,510,450 and 310 ( TE 250 with the 310 kit ). The 310 was my favorite. Felt light and nimble like the 250 but had enough to allow me to hang with the larger bikes in most situations

Agree with Home Finance. I have had a 510 and 450 both top bikes but for single trail the 310 is a big bore killer. Have a go with the Athena big bore kit.

I had valve problems with my 04 450. They would hang open on the start up. Fixed on the 05 and up.

I was all set on putting in the 300 kit when I came accross the 450, the 450 will require a new (450) CDI and exhaust and the broken 250 would get the big bore kit, close to the same out of pocket all said and done.

A good friend of mine rides a hibread XR650 with CRF450 front end and rear swing arm that he fliped over to get rid of linkedge (ktm style), and he thinks that more torqe would be a great thing in the woods because I would only be adding the weight of the 450 jug and head and mabee some in the exhaust (10 lb ?). I think I may be leanning tords the 300 kit in my 250 motor.

Thanks for your thoughts and if anyone else wonts to chime in I would appreciate it as I'm not going to make the call to Hall's for the parts for mabee a week or so. So make up my mind.

IMHO torque for woods riding is way overrated. You need enough to get the job done. Any more just makes the bike more tiring to ride.

I have a 2009 tc 450, and a 2010 te 310. I have also ridden many 250f's including a 2009 te250. Being an MX bike, I think the tc 450 revs a bit freer than a te 450, but I am guessing on that. Out of the three, I like the 310 the best. It has the lighter feel of the 250's with a touch more grunt when you really need it. The 450 is too much in my opinion for tight stuff - you lose too much energy working the bigger bike in the tight stuff from a physical standpoint and you will get tired quicker - get tired, ride slower, make more mistakes... If the 310 kit and the 450 parts are the same cost, I would go for the 310, IMHO.

Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

I will,
Also, I'm doing some changes (mods) like just took frame to a friends body shop and blasted it and droped it off at the Powder Coating shop, Gloss white like the newer bikes, as well as geting the forks re anodized black. A budy of mine is makeing me a brace/bracket to go around the W.E.R damper that doubles as a headlight ( Trail Tech HID) mount sence the headlight can't set on the fender do to the damper, and then some of the basics like some anodized parts here and there.

i recently had the opportunity to sample a friends new 250, it was nice, definitely more nimble than my 07 te450 but after being used to the bigger bike the little one felt a little too easy for me, especially on the single trail stuff, i guess it's what you're used to but i'm happier on my 450 even if it is a little more work. i just love the extra grunt i guess.

I had a 250TE 2005 & now I have a 310 {Athena Kit] I couldn't be happier. I would rather go fast in the tight stuff than out on the 2 track but you can catch up time on either. Getting tired later makes for mistakes & injuries so the smaller bike would be my pick.[It depends on what kind of shape you are in] Hall's also did my rebuild.[also needed crank bearings]They are good people & great to deal with. With the 04's & 05's the price is getting close to making it not feasible. Good luck!

I agree that it is coastly but it also is cheeper than a new bike. I figure with the frame (powder coating) fork rebuild w/re-anodizeing and all motor work (inclouding 300 kit, gear coating inside motor and KG coating (kinda like paint) the outside of the motor, I will be around $1,800. It will be like getting a new bike to me

.

I prefer the 450, the 250's always seem sluggish to me, maybe the 300 kit may make a difference. what condition is the 450 motor in?? it might be flogged out and require a rebuild as well. at least you 250 engine when fixed will last for ages.

That's what i spent for the rebuild & Athena Kit & no headwork. I agree, it will be like having a new bike, looks & all.

For a little more $. You should consider putting the TC cam and ignition on. Will give it a good bit more juice, rev quicker and longer.

I would go with the 310 kit

I ridden dozens of bikes over the years, with dirt bikes ranging from 50's to 650's, 2 stroke and 4 stroke. After one of our trail clubs rides, a bunch of us were sitting around the campfire and one of the guys asked of all the bikes I'd been on, which were more fun, my big 510 and 500 2 strokes, or the smaller bikes.........I told him the 500 2 stroke and TC510 were the most exciting (my TE510 just below those), but the most fun riding have typically been the smaller 250-350 size bikes, and I found many times, short of wide open desert and big hill climbs, I can actually cover trails faster on smaller bikes using less energy.

My TE510 has been a great bike and I love the power it has, but it is tiring when things get technical and really tight/steep......the 450's aren't that much easier.
I also told him, to me the perfect size bike is a 250-300 2 stroke or 310-350 4 stroke, hopefully with electric start..........so for now with Husky's that would pretty much mean the TE310 (I want lights too)

I just found out today that Hall's can't get the rod kit, only the full crank assem. $860.00 OOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUTTTTTTCCCCCCH****************************************!!!

That just took it to $2,300 . Their goes all the (Bling) money.

If anyone knows where I can get a rod kit, let me know. I found a ProX, From a distributer in Austraila, can't sell to the states.

Just got the frame back from Powder coater for the second time, first time thay didn't get coating down in the channel where the sub frame bolts on. Thay shot the second coat for free ( shot entire fram), looks great. As soon as I figure out how to post photos I wll.
