    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

hi all, I have a '06 610 SM w/4,853 miles, and low comprsssion. Before I tear into it, I was wondering if anyone here had experienced any issues with these engines. I've heard folks say the Husky motors are decent/durable. I threw this out over @SMJ, and was told to check the de-comp mechanism.That sounds fair enough, also recieved the suggestion that if the cam chain hadn't been "maintained" (adjusted?) it could've become an issue. 4K-6K miles was a range that was suggested as a point where a problem may be encountered if chain tension maint had been neglected. I need a service manual,too. I've been in contact with Hall's, are they a good source for parts/tech support, or do I contact Husky in NJ? I'm losing faith in my local Husky dealer since they were ordering a mag cover for this bike, and told me 2-3 days, 2-3 weeks ago.I offered to pay for it, but was told no... HUH? That's not how it should be done anyway...that's when I called Hall's.They had it on the shelf! WOW! I'll pay the price, but don't BS me. Thanx for any advice you may offer !
 
If it were me, I think the first thing I would do if my compression was low is to do a leakdown test to see where the compression is leaking. After doing so, it could be less of a mystery after I tore it down.

Unless you hear a lot of nasty noises I'm not sure how a worn cam chain could cause low compression. Do you hear a lot of noise that you could associate with a chain slapping around and hitting things? The adjuster was an automatic type when the bike was new, so maintenance would have been minimal at most.

As far as crap goes, I have never gotten any out of my engine. I can't speak for others though. You never know.
 
sorry for the "crap" comment, I must've mislead with that reference. I should've used, "issues"... as for any engine noises, well there are none, at least nothing unusual.My thoughts on the cam chain, were that possibly it HAD gotten out of time, and the piston found the bottom of the valve/s. Since I have yet to open one of these up, and have no associates that have any experience with these engines, i just don't know much about them. If the motor has gotten out of time, would it not hit the piston with a valve/s?I have only had the bike since 8/27, and I just haven't had a chance to get to it yet.these queries, are simply preliminary research.As stated, I'll be needing a service manual, with specs., to even start this effort. A "pictorial" with text was posted @SMJ for R&R of the chain itself...I've had the motor spinning with starter motor, not running.Thanx,again!
 
Hall's and Tasky's have allot of parts in stock. As far as a manual goes, 10 bucks at Hall's on CD. Get it shipped with the cover. Have not had any issues with my FI bikes, so I can't give you direction on tear down and repairs. A leak down would be first and foremost as Xcuvator said.
 
Valve adjustment? Valves tend to tighten when new if it is out of spec it could be holding one of the valves open slightly. Auto decomp on the cam stuck? Decomp lever on the bars is the cable to tight? Was the air filter maintained did dirt get in? A 610 doesn't usually lose compression. Like they said do a leak down and listen for where the air is coming out that will tell you the issue. Air from the air box means intake valves need adjustment, same with air from the exhaust, if it is coming from the oil fill hole it is rings.
