• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

610 rattles hard

Hi!

I recently bought a 2006 SM 610, with FCR carb and 13000km on the clock. It wasn't really maintained but was quite Ok. I changed the timing chain (tensioner was already at 11 clicks) and changed the Reed valve.

But something I didn't do correctly. Valves are ticking, the balancer shaft we retimed (and it was WRONG thanks to manufacturing error on 2006 Huskeys), and quite often there is a terrible rattling noise:

It appears on sec 8 and in the end of the video. It also appears on straights, on constant speed around 3800 RPMS and when I close throttle...

What IS that???? Any ideas?

WBR,
Alexander

Great question... I don't have a 610, so I am not sure what normal is. I hope someone with a 610 watches the 30 second video and gives their input.

How many miles on the bike? The rocker shafts and bushings are known to get loosed. Could be why you hear the valve tick. Does the other sound come from the top or bottom?
Before I ran it too much I would pull the oil screens and check for metal.

Have a look at the cam bearings. My 08 was doing a noise similar to that, and it did it randomly now and then just like yours and finally it was a faulty cam bearing that was falling apart inside the head.Another guy had a problem like that with the 610.

What do you mean by "retimed the balancer shaft" specifically (i.e. what exactly did you move/change)? If it went 13K and was running relatively well before timing chain job I would double check it. You did have the cams and the timing marks on the clutch side of the engine in the correct positions before putting new timing chain in?
