  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

79 390 OR suspension

Ok, I'm new to this forum and vintages Huskys as well. I have a 79 390 OR and am looking to set it up for the Calvmx series. I now have Curnutts on the rear (tired of getting almost thrown over the bars when I come up short on doubles) and have picked up a pair of Ohlins 16.5" remote resivoirs that need serious work. Any recommendations on who to have do the work ( I live in So. Cal but not opposed to shipping ). I also have a 40 mm fork setup for it ( now has the 35mm), I have 2 pairs , one has white lowers and the other the silver lowers. The silver lowers are about 3/4" shorter then the white, not sure which pair to rebuild ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's a fun track bike , just not forgiving of rider error.

welcome to the forum, and you are certainly in the right place. the parts you are thinking of using will be a huge upgrade. there are many who can rework your ohlins, the only place i can personally recommend is WER but they specialize in enduro/woods uses. great service and knowlegde tho.
as for the forks, i would use the ones have the better height application for your chassis. the shorter ones are likely from a wr model. whoever does your shocks can set you up with a good spring rate for the rear as well as the front. after you get your suspension dialed in, it will unlock the great chassis that is a hoosky!
im sure someone will be along with some suggestions for you that are more helpful for moto-x application. not sure if you have ever had your suspension set up professionally but its such a huge difference getting the springs and damping sorted, good luck.
dont be afraid to post some pics as well.

I have heard nothing but good things about Drew @ WER, but he is on the east coast. You may want to give Brian at Moto-Vintage Suspension a call. He is in San Diego, CA and does suspension work for a lot of the CALVMX riders. He is an Ohlins dealer and does quality work at fair prices. I have had him go thru a couple of Ohlins shocks for me and he even rebuilt a pair of vintage Fox Airshox for my '79 Honda CR250. Call him at 619-281-0455.

Hey Ben, I had Drew do my ohlins for my 79 wr and they work great . I would choose the forks your going to use in accordance to the correct length of the rear shock what ever they may be. I don't know O R suspension that well but 16.5 seems offly long to me for the rear twins. That sounds more like C R stuff that used the longer swing arm. I installed 40 mm forks up front on mine to they were W R forks tho (shorter bottoms) Try and find out if the or swing arm mounts are in the same spot as the cr and then go from there . Let us know what you come up with , this has been done lots of times on here. Good luck and send us some pics.

I totally remember my own 390 doing that. I had put a set of Koni remote reservoir shocks on mine back then. The Ohlins will be much better!
