• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

First thing is first need to positivity ID bike and all of its parts. I have what I believe to be an 81 390 xc engine block number 2080 40 mm Forks larger tank. I want to start by doing R&R's on both the front and rear suspensions. I need to ID these piggyback type shocks I don't know if the reservoirs are missing or that's all there is to them.so if someone knows i need to get this thing done and get to riding.

Frame number mm 03216 engine block number 2080 0 741 correct me if I'm wrong but 40 mm Forks come out in 81 along with a larger tank. Because I don't find any frame numbers that start with M M after 1980 but I'm not sure because I think I remember finding a 81 250 WR frame number starting with mm in that case that's what the frame would be and someone put a 390 engine in it. is it possible that a few bikes came off the assembly with a larger Forks in 1980

40mm forks, piggyback ohlins shocks, roundish tank are all features of 82 up bikes. In 1981 some models retained the 35mm forks, square tank and remote reservoir shocks of the 1979-80 models, while some (eg 430wr and cr) got the newer features.

There were no 390 models issued in 1981 The 2080 engine code you listed shows up for 1980 390CR and 1980 390OR at www.husqvarna-parts.com I have had 40mm forks on a 1978 ML frame so they certainly could have ended up on a 1980 frame. same with later model piggyback Ohlins. However your shocks do not appear to be Ohlins. Possibly second generation Works Performance and they just went out of business.

With a bike that is over 35 years old and has a good compatibility with parts from different years the only way to accurately date it is the frame number, the forks, wheels, body work and even the engine could come from a myriad of different models.

The engine number #2080 is a "OR" not a "XC". The 2080 also is listed for the cr. Confusing. Either way she's a 390cc that matters she's fast. The OR tranny has the lower gears 1-3 are wr, the 4-6 are cr ratios. This elimates the bog at low rims when we shift the wr too early without winding it up. The last three gears 4-6 being cr ratios keeps her up in the meat of the power band.

Note, The 420cc engines were autos. The 420 cylinder does fit the 390 engine. One must beaware of this cylinder swap to the 390 also. Once you remove the head measure the bore. Food for info.

I believe my '81 250cr had 40mm forks. MM engine number was 2079.

The 1981 250CR I am working on has 6 speed transmission in the cases and in factory specs. I also have an 82/83 CR transmission with 6 speeds.
I am sure the 5 speeds you speak of are the later(1987)CR.

The 1985 CR 250 5 spd is a Husky Odd ball, almost all Husky's were 6 speeds, except some 500's & Auto's

My local husky dealer said 5 speeds were rare. I wonder if husky back in the day offered a five speed change over kit. If we look at the gear ratios a five speed in first gear is the same ratio as a six speed in second gear.
