• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

83/84 engine and chassis numbers conundrum

Hi, I would like to know the number frame, and the frame is powder coated. Before to start work, wher is placed the frame number? A picture will help very much to not take away paint tnat is not necessary.
Also, I would like to know if the fork is from a CR 1984. The fork leg measure 48.5 cm, or 19.09".
Thanks a lot.

the frame number is stamped (on my 84)on the right hand side below where it reads HUSQVARNA 1 ,it is very lightly stamped though

Did they do the same change to the head angle at the WR500 -84 frames?

According to some old literature I have, the 1984 models all received the same frame change. That, the seat, plastic tank, watercooling on CR's were all part of the major changes for 1984.

Hi, before to take the paint off and see the frame number, I'll appreciate please if somebody can take a picture of the exact position of the number frame for a 1983/84 model. Thanks!

try this ..

OK, I'm going to measure my rake so I can determine if I have the 1983 frame (30 degrees) or 1984 frame (28.5 degrees). That should answer definitively my questions.

The problem is the rear shocks have been replaced with newer none original shocks, and the front forks have been swapped for 87 model Husky forks.

Can anyone tell me the correct eye-to-eye for the rear shocks?

Can anyone tell me the correct fork length (centre-of-front-axle to underside of top nuts)? Alternatively does anyone know if the '83 and '87 forks for the CR500/XC500 are the same length?

Thanks very much.

Hi, I am interested to know what is the procedure and the references to measure the fork angle. Please let us know. Thank you

One obvious difference between '83 & '84 frames that I have noticed (and somebody will hopefully correct me if I am wrong), is the tube that goes across under the front of the seat (that the main backbone tube is welded to) has the ends welded up on the '84 frames . On all the '83 Husky 2 stroke frames that I have seen, this tube has open ends , that you can see through from one side of the frame to the other . I don't have an image of an '83 frame at the moment, but here is a picture of an '84 frame :

Good find !:applause:

In this magazine article it shows the open tube in a 83 XC

It would be helpful if members can confirm this difference detail

Well finally I took the paint and checked the frame number. Also the engine is a 2094, 4 speed. Upon the frame/engine reference numbers, the bike should be a 83 model  But, the bike has all of the 84 model !
so, I dont know. It is possible that the factory delivered as 84 models with 83 engine and 83 frame numbers? Also, my frame has the tube welded up as the member Husky500evo made the point.
The bike looks like a 84 model, but, the 4 speed engine, frame and engine number, upon the reference list, it is a 83 model.
The last that I can check is the steering angle, but I dont know how is the right procedure to do this, as, the bike on the floor, compress the suspensions and then, the floor line as a reference is not reliable.

I think one possible answer is explained earlier in this thread..

But the fly in that ointment was in USA in 84 Husky offered a free kit to re fit 83.s to look like 84s in 84 to blow out all leftover 83 models. This was seat, all plastic, graphics sticker kit, shoot even had a 6 speed free to drop into an 83 CR 500

Many people prefer the 4 speed as the gears are stronger and therefore more reliable for motocross, so I am told, so it would not surprise me if someone chose not to drop in a six speed box.

In terms of measuring the rake, I had a shop do it for me. I think they have a special measuring device.

Husky500evo- that tube is on all WR & XC models, they also came with different rear brakes (non-full floater) and the WR had shorter swing arm & suspension.

Leftcoast, I think that you might be referring to the frame tube for protection under the motor, that came with all the '83/'84 WR,XC,TE,TX (& AE500 in '84/5) models . The frame tube that I posted about is the one under the front of the seat (welded at 90 degrees to the main backbone). The rolling frame in the picture is from an AE500, which has the shorter WR suspension and non full floating rear brake.

If this detail is exclusive to make a easy identification of the 83/84 models, it will be real find.....hope the members with 83 models can confirm this

Hi, take a look of this frame add in ebay. The frame number confirm a 1983 model (Under 11000), and it looks with that tube end closed.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/83-H...ccessories?hash=item19b757b0b0#ht_1137wt_1162
It seems that, may be, in some time the factory start to close that tube end for 1983 models.
So, with one exception to the rule, it confirms that we have to follow the frame numbers.

The pictures of the '83 CR250 in this thread clearly show the open ends on the frame tube under the front of the seat, that I have posted about . I can only agree that the frame on ebay maybe has a frame number towards the end of the '83 model production run .

Yep, and I confirm also that my bike is 83 model. It has the frame number CO 079xx. And that tube ends are closed. May be also one of the production end bikes.

I have two 83mod cr frames, both have the tube closed.

(maybe the 83s where closed and the 84s open:))
