• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

86 500 xc

Makes sense to me. Ill replace both. Thanks! It's gunna have to wait a little bit tho, gotta finish a land cruiser restoration to create the funding. Are the seals readly available?

Yes, I got mine from David Pratt at tritrophy (ebay store) email him directly and save the ebay and paypal fees, to dpratt@tritrophy.com with the part#s of what you need. Are in the U.S.?

Yeah in Northern California, USA. Think I found them thru Halls Husqvarna. Gotta research the part #s, need to get bike done so I can rip motor apart, to see what current bore is.

Got the seat springs tacked in.

Suprise, thanks for posting pics. It gives me a "look behind the curtain", as I've yet to be inside a husky as of yet. I've built a dozen motor but all have been 4stroke.
I haven't had much free time but the bit I did get I started messing with some leather and copper belt rivets to add to the saddle. Still trying to decide if I should buy the tools to stamp it myself or just pay to have it done. Knowing I'm a cheapskate I bet on the tools! Also will be died mostly or all black. Rivets are not set to proper depth.

I would look at some descent "curl" at the back of that seat unit otherwise when she hooks up on the pipe, you aint gunna be on it!

If it become a problem I will ad a hoop made of 3/8or 5/16 round stock, to act as an extension to the top of the seat. I gave it as much rise in he back as is in my sportster seat. It's common to launch with only the back tire on the ground and I stay in the seat with it. I kno this is a much different beast tho, much, much lighter. I load it into the bed of the truck forward, then pick it up and turn it around! so I can roll down the ramp forward.

Got the radiators mounted and put a tube in from top tube below the welded in for the tank mount(top tube) to front down tube just behind the strafing tube, to strengthen spine.

Also mad an upper exhaust mount. Need to grind welds and reweld with tig.

Going to put a isolator bushing on either side of the mount tab. Will give a little dampening but still have a thru bolt. Can always change thing later if I don't work out. Aside from possibly running the stampede it will probly only see drag strip duty from time to time.

Just remember the power to weight ratio will be so much more agressive than the Sportster you show in your profile. The 500 engine is a brute and weighs so much less so better take it gently when you start riding it

Is there sufficient space on the drive side for a meatier rear tire as you are likely going to want a wider contact patch in order to really hook up on asphalt or concrete?

Jim, I'm gerry aware of that fact this bike will b a handful! That's exactly why I'm building it. And the power/weight ratio will be pretty radical! Its weight will be noticeably less that a stock 500xc and brings that I have to rebuild the engine the power will be astronomically higher that what it was the last time I rode it. Simple said"I'll be pussy footing" for the first bit. Excited to see what will happen when I grab a handful tho!
Adam. Tires have been a debate, I was going to run "all wether" tires so I could manage a bit of dirt roads bu now I'm thinking traction on road is more important. Havin 18" wheels front and back also make tire choice a little more complicated. Want tire to be same diameter or even taller/narrower in front than back. So far it's looking like perelli (something) demons. Front 100/90 18 (25.xx diameter) back 130/70 18(25.xx diameter). Befor I order I will do more research, really would like a 21" up front but don't think the budget will allow it.
Riding down to big city to by some leather tools to finish seat. Couldn't find anyone local who could do he stamping for me so it made the decision very simple. Ill post up some pics soon as I'm pounding my design in.

Just so that you know I am not knocking your build. If you did the tube bending on the frame, I take my hat off and bow to you . Excellent work!! I am glad to see you are not cutting up the Husqvarna frame as I just bought one to try to keep my 86 400WR intact and resellable. If you ever saw the episode of Pawn Stars where they took a true vintage 74 400CR and turned it into a chopper because they saw no resale in OEM form. They cut up the frame and turned it into something that I could not see any appeal to it. It hit to the core of what we care about in this forum

I got a 150 dunlop mutant in by machining 4mm from the outer of the front sprocket and making a spacer to push it out to the circlip then using a worn old rear sprocket cut down the machined to 4mm thick as a spacer on the rear. This gives me enough clearance for the 150-60-17 dunlop or a 140-80-17 distanzia.

Jim no worries, no offence taken! I did build he frame/ bend tube. I have a custom auto fab shop and am used to building cagesin both senses(cars and roll cages). I kno that choping the stock husky frame is a big no no! Almost sacreligious! Don't think ill ever want to go back once it's dun but I want to be able to restore it to stock if I ever feel the need(sentimantel value, was my pops then my brothers who is no longer with us). Thanks for the support! Also it's a "real" bender(pro tolls) not a harbor freight jobie, makes clean bends.

Wildebeast good bit of tech advice! A 17" rim would really open up my options for tires. A lot more limited with the 18s. I'd like a 150 if I could find it in a 70 series low pro. Tryn to keep from having a smaler tire up front. As it sits rite now I don't love the look of the smaller tire but the nobbie rear makes it look like an old hill climber. Still not sure what I'm gunna do for tires. A 21 up front would also make choosing a large rear work. Just don't kno what 21 will fit a Yamaha XS front end/ brake combo.
