• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Air box door mod

Don't expect perfection in a new model... And rightly so... Well when I brought my first KLR650A1 back in '88, ironically through the PFG Gold Coast. I was notified after 15 months that the tank was faulty, mine was fine but they replaced it anyway. After 3+ years I got notification again saying that the engine mounts and tank rubbers had to be replaced. Upon inspection it was decided (without me) that they would replace the tank for a second time.

There are some dealers and importers that want to do the right thing. And I'm quite sure if BM hadn't of sold out to Katoom then the Paul Feeney Group would have gone to bat for us and the TR

ps chinese pit-bikes dont have air boxes, they have....err pods:D

Tadaa!! :applause:

As for PFG/Husky and BMW as the "owner" of the whole shebang....
Took 'em 10 years to admit they screwed up big time on the final drives of their own product

Our little TR airbox would've been next, I guess....about 2055 or so  ;)

Am I the only one who left the cut out of the air box off? I just didnt see a point of keeping it a sealed box after putting the UNI on. 500-800 miles on it since the pod mod and no issues yet. 3800mi on the clock before the mod, I wouldnt say it made it any faster. But it made it more FUN to get on it. Low end seems to have a smoother roll on, but i did the desmog at the same time as the filter so that could be partially that.

They sound like statutory recall items, not necessarily an importer wanting to do the right thing. Only defects which might foreseeably result in death or injury must be manufacturer recalled. Tanks, engine mounts and tank rubbers might all fall into that category. On a KLR they're probably going to be relatively cheap items anyway. It doesn't cost the dealer anything to replace a tank under recall twice, so it's not like they're doing anything charitable there.. most probably they can bill the hours back to the importer.

Without putting too much thought into it, the greatest surface are of the pod filter will probably be facing forward, with the connector between the throttlebody and the pod filter being mainly exposed by leaving the cover off, so whether or not it has any real effect will probably depend on the airflow through the airbox when the bike is moving. If it encourages airflow then it might be a good thing. If it starts sucking air from the back of the airbox then it might reduce the air movement through the pod filter, that might be a bad thing. Most people doing pod mods will keep some sort of pre-filter in place, which keeps the airbox dust free, and that can only be a good thing. Having dust sucked in through the open airbox lid is just going to increase the potential for dust getting sucked it, and it will get your pod filter dirty too. I'd say the cons outweigh the pros, - unless you can find an extra 15HP.

I should have added the Kawa factory into the equation. They ultimately footed the bill.
