• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Bike camping food ideas?

Fresh bread in the campfire is good too... can take premixed dry ingredients add water and just whack it in the coals.

Plenty of recipe's on the net... google "damper" "campfire damper" "australian damper" etc etc

That's cool, in all my years of camping, I'd never seen that. I don't usually build a campfire, but I'm going to have to try this. Heck, I'll probably try it at home this weekend.

Seriously?? I might have to try this!

I just tried a new tasty beer that might go well with the chicken and rice. Leinenkugels Orange Shandy!

I call it "carb loading my carbs." It's super high in sodium, so heads up on that. I think I'm going to experiment with putting together my own freezer bag rice meal combos. I definitely think it's the way to go, brown rice for starch, veggies if you can, and some protein of some sort, and whatever seasonings suit you. It's a good combo for energy the next day (or at least it is in my head).

For breakfast, oatmeal or cliff bar - race days I'll bring along a banana, bike trips I like banana chips. After dinner I'll boil water and make coffee in my nalgene with a H2JO, then filter it into a 16 oz nalgene that I'll take swigs from it throughout the morning (keeping it in my tank bag).

I like my individual press pot coffee cups. Pre-measure the Peet's Italian or French Roast and powdered creamer and carry in the cup. Multi-day trips I'll put measured amounts in baggies and store them in the cups...

My pan can be seen sitting on my folding grill. The little jelly jar in the background lives in my neoprene Husky can cozy that Hammer gave me in Mexico. It has measuring hashmarks in the glass for canning so it doubles as a measuring cup for our dehydrated meals and a wine glass. Oh! Wine! A bota bag is this bike-camper's best friend :) Mine holds 2 bottles. In the winter and colder months we carry a flask of scotch to sip by the fire. Bota bags are cool! I guess this is a "His and Hers" shot of our bota bags hanging off the bikes :D

Baked beans and beer, man can live forever on these.

And provide significant entertainment on the trail the next day

Precooked bacon is extremely light, compact and always tasty, even if you don't heat it, it's good on a tortilla or between a few pieces of bread.

Instead of Cheerios, try some fiber one.Good flavour and it's even good for you.

Oberto makes bacon jerky. Keeps without refrigeration for a few days after the package has been opened. Tastes just like regular bacon.

I've made it at parties and give it to the kids to wrap on the end of sticks... they seem to have fun!
Self raising flour, bicarb soda, salt, butter and beer. AND GOLDEN SYRUP!

Can keep it out of the ashes if you want to. On a stick or in foil or a pan...

They missed the #1 staple in my house. Peanut butter.

I wonder if hard boiled eggs are the same?
When we camp, we take a dozen or so hard boiled eggs, pre cooked bacon, and potatoes. We put the potatoes in the coals of the fire at night, take out to cool, then slice and fry for breakfast the next day.
Hard boiled eggs are often a big part of my race day lunch.

...I just carry a few of those small packets of mayo with me...
Anyone know what would be a good fast food place to get those mayo packets? I looked around locally and apparently all the condiments are on full lock down in this area. Where I used to live they were on the open counter.

...too much carbs without protein can throw me for a loop...
Apparently I am the same way. I've been experimenting, and had carbs with minimal protein one day - and I felt terrible for 2-3 days.

I want to thank each and every person who contributed to this thread. Thanks!
