• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Bike insurance - 2 questions

Question 1) For those of you who have bike insurance, when you call them, do they need to contact another company to make the changes?

Example:
  • I have AAA for cars & Bikes.
  • Because AAA does not sell (EDIT: they do not sell BIKE insurance themselves, they do sell car insurance directly) insurance directly (they are brokers for American Modern), they need to be the 'go-between' / liaison. So if I have any questions, they write down the question, call American Modern, then AAA calls me back with their answer. Annoying.
Question 2) What insurance company do you like, and why do you like them?

I like Farmers/Bristol West (same company). They have great rates for me and when I was involved in an accident it was a quick and easy process. I used to have USAA and for motorcycle insurance they partnered with Progressive. It was pretty annoying if you needed anything and that was one of the reasons I switched.

I here State Farm is great too. You need a car on the policy also or they won't insure the bike (atleast it used to be that way). Good luck!

Regarding 1) I think any broker will have to do the same, since their role is basically an intermediary. They can probably answer basic questions, but anything out of the ordinary, particularly to do with on/off road insurance goes to the actual insurer. At least that's how it's been with me.

I'm in Canada, so 2) probably isn't relevant for you, but I'm insured with Jevco. $495 this year for on/off road insurance, including fire and theft coverage.

I have State Farm for 6 of my bikes, No problems on claims , even put one in on my WR250 after it was recovered.

Are both Farmers & State farm 'direct sell' i.e. the people you talk to, do not need to contact other people (act as intermediary)?

Farmer is a brand of its own and you just go through your agent. The key is to choose an agent that is willing to do their job.
I prefer an agent over a phone call so that's why I went that route

It does apply to the the USA but I pay ~$10 per yr for motorcycle liability insurance ... Any licensed driver on my bike is covered ...

Not sure why it is even needed because in the case of an accident, the crash damage can be arbitrated on the spot BEFORE insurance or the law is even involved in the matter ... I guess the case of bodily harm is where the insurance is needed ...100,000P is the top number covered.

Never had bike insurance in the states :) ... So the 10$ per yr here is an increase ...

Good luck with your insurance purchase and the best insurance is the rider ...Ride safe ...

I have Progressive full coverage, it's about $100 per year which covers 5k for my WR250 and another 5k for gear and accessories and mods. No other company even came close to that deal.

So what do these guy pay for gear? You turn in a claim on gear and get new gear?

What about the bike? You crash and bend a radiator or pipe ... You get a new pipe or radiator?

~Every time I used car insurance. the rates were gonna go up ... Do the rates ever go up on bike insurance?

Honestly I've never made a claim but the policy covers gear up to the same amount that the bike is insured for. I figured if my bike and gear bag got stolen I'd produce my receipts for mods and gear and at least I wouldn't be starting over.

I have State Farm for $288 a year. I've called everybody and that is the cheapest I can find. I have liability and comprehensive and no medical payments. Progressive wanted $488 a year. I've never made an insurance claim in my life and have a great driving record and don't understand how others are getting such lower rates. I am not a homeowner and due to a divorce 3 years ago my credit is not the best. That may be the reason.

Progressive for me. I have both my street bike ( FZ1) and dirtbike (CR125) through them with good rates on both. I have Farmers for my home and autos, but Progressive was cheaper on my bikes.

I have State Farm on all my vehicles now (after having to get a lawyer involved to get Progressive to honor their policy). For all the bikes I pay $850 a year for liability and replacement value for damage, and a supplemental medical rider (includes air transport). $5k accessory and gear coverage rider (insurance companies are only required to replace gear that's required by law, in Oregon that's your helmet, so a supplemental is needed for the rest of your gear, regarded as "accessories"). Nice thing about State Farm, they call my CBR1100XX (the fastest motorcycle in the world) a "touring bike" so it's super cheap. LOL.

I get discounts for AMA, BMWMOA, HRCA and HOG memberships, home ownership, Team Oregon, and being a firefighter.

A multi-line broker is just that, a broker. I talk to my direct-line State Farm agent and can get anything answered on the spot without a backstop call.

I was quoted by an Australian insurer over $1300 AUD for Comprehensive Insurance (Your bike and others for crashes, and your own for theft fire etc). Registration and personal injury insurance is separate and additional (and compulsory).

Im not sure what you call that in the USA but over here Id say we get ripped off here too.

I use AAA mostly because our cars and houses are all insured with them. I know this doesnt really answer your questions but it puzzles me how different quotes for the same coverage from different companies can be, I've shopped around before and got quotes for full coverage on a small dual sport ranging from $500 a year from Progressive to $90 a year from Geico and everywhere in between.

I've had Geico for about 5 years....never had an issue. Two accidents that weren't my fault, both got taken care of seamlessly. The only small complaint I had was when I added my bike it was a separate policy with a separate payment. It was nice to get the multi-policy discount but I hate having the separate payment.

I've got way too many bikes insured with Progressive. Got our camper van insured through them as well. I like being able to call them at 3am and having a nice, pleasant, knowledgeable person to talk to. I called Progressive from MotoXotica the night I picked up my new Terra and had good comp and collision coverage within less than 15 minutes for $130 per year. Sweet.

Progressive was way too expensive for me, but that was just for one bike. I was having some problems with State Farm when they accidentally insured one of my street licensed bikes as a recreational vehicle. The DMV sent me a notice that they would suspend my plate while I was trying to straighten things out, so because the machine was one of those dirt bikes that's not really supposed to have a license plate and it was up for renewal, I panicked and insured it with Progressive while I had State Farm fix the mess. Progressive's policy cost me 5 times what my State Farm policy did, but of course I have been with them for 40 years and have 3 automobiles, 5 motorcycles and one modest sized toy hauler insured with them.....but personally I think that if they didn't pay Flo so much, they could give me better rates.:p
