• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Bike insurance - 2 questions

I am beginning to think, at least for AAA, Farmers, State Farm - which agent to use could be important... whereas it seems Geico & Progressive are a large companies that you call up with no agent - correct?

OK, this is the summary of comments so far, did I summarize it correctly?

I've got way too many bikes insured with Progressive. Got our camper van insured through them as well. I like being able to call them at 3am and having a nice, pleasant, knowledgeable person to talk to. I called Progressive from MotoXotica the night I picked up my new Terra and had good comp and collision coverage within less than 15 minutes for $130 per year. Sweet.
I've got progressive on my boat as well and they treted very well when we sunk it. They paid for salvage, egine pickleing, and all repairs. It was an expensive pay out for them (about $1 short of a total) and they never even raised my rate.

Progressive's policy costs four times more than my State Farm policy does. I have had State Farm for 27 years.

State Farm Mutual for all of our policies except house. You do have to have car insurance with them to insure a bike (or at least so I was told). In Oklahoma you also have to have a M endorsement. They do a credit check, so your rate can vary quite a bit based on your credit-worthiness. I call my agent and they either answer me right away or call me back.

I have been very satisfied with their service and have filed several claims over the years. I pay only 50/6 months for full coverage on each dirt bike. Another nice thing is that if you sell a bike and get a different one, you can roll the coverage over to the new one and they don't have to rewrite the policy. They are a little higher on car insurance, but they are really the only company I have found that will insure everything that we own (street bikes, dirt bikes, RV, personal articles [have my camera equipment covered], car). Many companies I contacted for quotes would insure one type of bikes but not others which was a no-go since we always have an eclectic collection of motorcycles.

State Farm here.
Shopped around with all the recommended insurers at the time & it turned out the one I already had gave me the best rate. $750 give or take. After my accident in 06 I can honestly say I was treated great & got covered for much more than I ever paid into the policy, 10 times over. Without the full policy, I would have been absolutely screwed financially & would not have received all the little things I needed over a 3 year period & 5 surgeries. No headaches from my insurer what so ever. I highly recommend them. At least in Canada

I have Progressive full coverage, it's about $100 per year which covers 5k for my WR250 and another 5k for gear and accessories and mods. No other company even came close to that deal.

I don't recall my premium, but I also use Progressive for all five of my bikes and my truck. You can only have four vehicles on a policy and trucks/bikes must be on separate policies, so, I have 3 policies. Heh. When I added my fourth bike, my premium went DOWN.

I checked all the other big insurance companies (Farmers, State Farm, Geico, etc). Progressive gave me the best deal. Partially due to the multi vehicle discount.

I've been fairly happy with them. I've had two claims, one was quick and painless, the other was long, drawn out and painful. It wasn't the insurance company's fault, though. Just don't expect the insurance agent to follow through once they've cut the check. At that point, you have to ride the shop's case yourself to get things done in a timely manner.

Oh yeah, do the safety course if you haven't. Most every company gives you a discount and if you do the advanced course it's cheaper because you take your own bike

Progressive is a lot cheaper if you use an agent rather than go directly to them. I have 4 bikes with tags and it costs me roughly $100 a bike for liability and comp. Adding collision sends the price out of sight. PM me if you want the name of my agent, it's a large company and they write policies nationwide.

This tid bit of information is extremely interesting, and could easily explain why the rates for Progressive seem to be all over the place.

Thank you for your kind offer about your agent, but I will try to do things locally.

Thank you for all your comments, greatly appreciated!

For this year, due to lack of time more than anything else, I went ahead and renewed with AAA, here is a summary of this thread with prices from AAA, Progressive, and Geico from there online calculators for similar coverage.

I used fictitious name and contact information so I am not flooded with marketing (which is what happened the last time I thought about switching).

I've got 5 bikes insured with Progressive and pay around $175 a year combined. I've got the basic coverage needed to tag the bikes and haven't priced full coverage. I'm up for renewal next month and now think I'll price full coverage. I bought my policy online and did not go through an agent.

I have insured with Farmer then AAA and now State Farm, their price pretty much competitive since we have home, trailer, motorhome, 1 street bike and 2 dual sports.
