  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

On another note, what about cog sizes?
Bike came with standard 13-47 but I felt it was a little high as had stalling issues coming into tight corners under heavy rear braking.
Changed 47 out to 50 and seems to of helped. Has anyone gone higher on the rear and if so do you miss the having the full use of the torque range?
what about the Brembo front brakes, are they fantastic or what
 
I run a 13/52; you lose a lot of top end speed but no more stalling on the single tracks. Well not the bikes fault; still some operator error stalling still going on****************************************!
 
I would be sticking to the 50, I found that best, I never went larger though, I was happy with 13/50. Yep those brakes rock.
 
is the 450 lots higher geared than the 510 ? i run 14-48 and i reckon still too revvy ! 14-44 on it when i got it and mates new bike has 14-47 stock from the dealer... i realise its a different bore but arent they the same engine ? also, 13-52 is terrible on fire roads but good for really tight stuff.. just wrong bike for it !
 
I went to 13/50 on my 510 right off the showroom - once the suspension broke in / set up and some fuel injection tweaks I went to 14/50 and never looked back. Motor pulled better off the bottom after break in.

The 510 is much happier to torque around than the 450, so you can get away with taller gearing. The 450 doesn't have the same torque and tends to rev a bit faster, you could always play around with your EFI mapping as well to get it where you like it.
 
13/49 works great on the 510.

Little lite on the highway as you find yourself running out of top end.

But it sure makes up for it on the S/T stuff.

Sprocket suggestions

I picked up sprockets while at a dealership a while back, but have not opened or installed them. I'm curious as to whether the advice I was given was sound.

Ride: TE51O
USE: All purpose from single track to highway for short runs.
My plan is to make this my mini adventure bike and use it for the Oregon Discovery Route, Western half of the TAT, but also use it for tight single track in the Oregon woods. I'd like to get up to 65 mph or so while not winding it too much, while still being ok for single track.

I was given a 14 front and 50 rear which from a chart I see is a 3.57:1 What do I need to do to calculate speed and RPM's for a given speed once I know the gear ratio?

Would this be a good set up for me?

I just found this gearing calculator that has helped me out since I asked the question: http://www.gearingcommander.com/

You can add your own info. in to determine speed at specific RPM's, chain links needed for that gearing, etc.


Anyone know whether 13/47 and 15/47 set ups would be able to use the same chain? The program I linked above shows I need 114 chain links for both, but I want to be sure. I've found some other formula's on-line, but my head started spinning.

Cafe Husky is fortunate to have gaspipe as a member.

I'll probably run 15/47 or 15/46 for the upcoming baja trip.

Aha. I knew I recognized that name. Gaspipe's ride reports (thanks again) as well as others on ADV are what convinced me to pick up the 510 and do some dual sporting adventures.

I'm having a tough time with an electrical issue on the 'berg. It has a small short somewhere, and for the life of me, I cannot find it. Drains the battery overnight. I think I will make a whole new harness for it and be done with tracing wires. I made new wheels for it and did some suspension work. It's a cool machine.

The 510's only headache for me is fuel capacity. If only a 4-5 gallon tank was out there, it'd be fine. I'm not completely in love with the 'Zoke 50's up front yet. Seems to pull 15/47 fine, but I did need a longer chain.

I went from a 50 (standard issue on an 06) to a 52 and it helped with stalling issues. However as the bike became more run in, it seemed to chug along in tight situations better so I reverted back to stock. I believe that for a mix of riding stock is best. If you are only doing tight stuff then going up a couple teeth on the rear is fine. The converse may well apply for wide open running and commuting use.
Note if the bike is new it will free up quited markedly- this may change your view.

fuel is an issue, but i just installed the acerbis handlebar tank. it is 1.3 gallons that siphons into the ims 3 gallon tank. it replaces the light, but i am planning on adding 2, 2 inch trailtech lights to the barkbusters or bars for the minimal night riding i would do in baja. along with a collapsible 1 gallon bag, available soon from just gas tanks puts me at 5.3 gallons. i am working on the zokes as well, super plush wants to take a crack at them. i have been happy with the stock sprockets, sorry for highjacking.

What sprox are on the TE450 as delivered? The transmission in the TE/TXC seems it will be nice for the more offroad-ish dual sporting. It's a long ways from wide ratio, IMHO. I'm going to carry a 14 tooth CS with me for the ugly stuff.

07s and prior were delivered with 13/50, newer models 13/47. I'm running a 14/50 at the moment, 1% lower than the 13/47.

I ran a IMS 3.9 on the TAT with a 1.25 Kolpin on the rear rack. The CR8EIX looked brand new all the way.
