    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Cold Start Issue

I recall noticing the problem more after I did the exhaust and POD Mod. I had be running the bike stock but with the PC5 setup and it was starting pretty well most of the time. Then I did both mods and it got a lot more finicky about starting. I've tried all kinds of settings in the PC5 and nothing has really fixed it. What seems to be most effective is taking out lots of fuel just for startup. I have a crazy setting of like -25 just below idle (cranking speed) to lean it out for start up, and I think often it's still getting too much fuel, or not enough air, which might be more likely. But if you hold the throttle open it doesn't work either.

First two tries are with no throttle. Last one is with the 1 RCH. Works every time and doesn't cost a dime!!

BTW, My Ural starts perfectly every time that way and it has carbs...

I hesitate on messing with the with the throttle plate stop screw or the TPS because the idle is so solid hot or cold and right in the RPM range. A slight twist of the right grip is so easy to do.

Mine was exactly like that for several months last winter/spring.
It was very random when it would happen, maybe 1 or 2 starts in 30 or so.
Just a touch of throttle though and it would fire off fine and had no signs of any running or idle issues.

FWIW my carbed DRZ, like your ural, needed a little twist as well to fire, without cracking the throttle it would not start most times.

I had not had any issues with this for months with my Terra, yet yesterday it did it again.
 
I always had to turnover twice with throttle + when starting cold...always no matter what the ambient temp was. With Power commander and autotune starts first time. I know the cost is prohibitive for most and another solution may be far cheaper but a side effect of pc and at was that. May help direct to a solution in your case.
 
I went to BMW Riverside yesterday. Eventhough they have never been a Husky dealer nor purchased the MOSS system for the husky, they can diagnose any faults with their existing BMW computer system. From what I understood, same software that deals with the 650GS can diagnose our bike.
They checked for faults, one appeared at the beginning but then it cleared just by starting the bike. Then did a reset and then where able to do an update. Reset the throttle sensor.
The bike still is not starting right.

I found out previously that two other TR650s had gone there to be checked and that's why I went there. So, if this guys can do it, then every BMW dealership should be able to check our Huskys.
I dealt with a guy called Kyle. Super nice guy and very helpful if anyone needs to talk to him about this.

YES... you video captures EXACTLY how my bike "trys" to start when it's cold. Whew... I thought it was just me or my setup, no it's some funky biz with the ECU programming, possibly made worse with pipes or air filter mods, not sure.

I am beginning to understand it needs a bit more air, just a bit, for a good cold start. What seems to be working good for me is on about the 2nd revolution just barely crack the throttle for one revolution then close it. Then it seems to catch and idle fine.

I can deal with it if I find a consistent routine that works. I've had so many bikes and most are pretty easy to start, but some have "routines".

I haven't had trouble starting my other FI bikes, only this one. All the carb'd bikes, no problem once you jet them correctly. The trickiest 2 bikes I've had to start were my BSA 441 and a Yamaha SR500. Both required a bit of a routine.

The funny thing is usually you can get an engine to start very easily. I've started engines just by squirting gas down the carb throat and cranking, very crude. It's kinda like the old British Amal carbs with ticklers that just flooded the venturi. But you know what, it worked.
 
It stands to reason they need a touch more air when you increase the fuel( PC 5 or AIT spoofer ) and increase exhaust flow ( GPR or Deamon).

Do you happen to know the name/model/version of the BMW Diagnostics tool the dealer was using?

What else can the system do.

It is good news!! All I know is what I wrote above. It's their system that is used for all their BMW bikes, though from what I understand he used the 650GS software to diagnose the Husky.

It's good to hear there is a helpful tech at a BMW dealership. The local BMW shop didn't want to touch my bike, they kinda have a sour attitude to be honest.

Our Husky dealer didn't even know what a Moss tool was when I asked them!
