• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Complacency and riding...

Personally what I do is leave a note where people can find it or call someone with an itinerary. Carry cell phone... but most importantly carry a whistle from a toy store that cost about 10 cents. Theory being if something bad were to happen, hopefully (eventually) I could get someones attention.

There was a hunter in the Mendocino National forest that hurt himself recently, and the first search parties could not find him, but subsequent hunters in the area found him. I would post a link to a local newspaper but cannot find one that is not plastered with annoying ads.

I'm certainly not going to wait for someone to ride with before going on a ride, life is way too short for that.

Look at the InREach SE also. I have one and offers 2 way text messaging and works on the Irridium sattelite network. If you want to communicate with your wife and kids you can easily. Since my cell is always out of range, I preserve it's battery in airline mode and may send a text using the InReach SE when starting out and at the end of my trip. Your recipients can respond to your texts but they cannot initiate them. Your messages also provide a link with your location on the Delorme map site. A little more than the Spot but not much and if your riding a few times a month where you may use the device the "safety" plan for $10 is reasonable and allows 10 messages a month. The nice thing is if you have simply broken down in a remote location you could massage your wife or a local bike shop you've spoken with for this reason, to rescue you or get you some assistance. Having SOS is great when you absolutely need it but just shy of that a message might be more useful and 2 way messaging would give you piece of mind that message was received and acted upon.

I am definitely going to look into getting one of these. I ride alone all the time and usually it's in remote areas and sometimes tricky terrain. Every time
I go I can't help but feel like I'm rolling the dice. I am always extra careful when riding alone, anyone who's watched one of my vids would agree, I'm sure as
that's another way of saying I'm slow. Better to ride alone than not go at all, imo.

KGO, ABC channel 7 news in San Fransisco still has it on their home page in the north bay news

Due to the remoteness of my areas trails I made it a point to never ride alone until a friend bailed on me,wanting to ride bad I picked a trail frequented by the areas mountain bikers figuring if I did have a bad crash someone would come by.
That ride went smooth but the next week on the same trail, this time with my buddy I took a bad spill 10 miles in and broke 5 ribs, not good! there was no way I was riding out and my friend went to get help, over two hours went by and not a soul came by before help returned, good luck if my injury was worse and I was alone. The crash happened so fast I never had time to react and I was 100% focused at the time.
If I was to ride alone again at the very least I would be carrying a spot but if a crash leaves you knocked out all the spots and sat phones won't help you.
