  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Cooking FMF

AA Class
Just started up the 2012 TE449 w/the new FMF Powercore4 for the first time.

Sounds great, runs great. From reading here I thought I might have to play w/the idle screw but all seems well so far.

When I shut the bike off there was all kinds of cookie baking smells and smoke coming out of the FMF. I assume this is oil burning off of metal? Normal?

Mike

mmmmmm cookies. chocolate chip or oatmeal?
How is the sound? I heard they can be on the loud side with no insert. If possible make a video so we can hear it. :applause:

Regarding the smell, it's either chocolate chip cookies or pizza, depending on if I ate dinner or not.

The sound isn't much louder if at all then stock. I would say it sounds a little deeper than stock and a bit more 'chugging' sounding if you know what I mean.

The guard comes with the pipe. However, the clamp from FMF's pipe to the Husky header pipe is not included. The stock clamp is too big, which somebody mentioned elsewhere on a different thread. That person found one through McMaster Carr.

I went to a local Honday/Suzuki dealer and showed him the clamp I needed. They ordered the same type of clamp from Moose Racing for $12. The FMF pipe diameter is 1.75" exactly. The Moose clamp was a weird dimension that covered from just under to just over 1.75". I put it on last night and it fit fine.

Did anybody else find the FMF fit not great? Meaning, the FMF slid on the Husky header perfectly. I then wrestled with the bolt from the lower frame mount to the FMF 'header pipe' but that eventually fit fine. However, once that was bolted on I had to twist/push the muffler towards the subframe to make the connection from muffler to subframe. The bolt holes lined up perfectly but the pipe didn't just 'lay in' nicely. I had to push it up to that position to reach the mounting point.

I installed it from the bottom up per the FMF instructions and didn't tighten bolts until all were installed. I also used high temp silicon from the FMF header pipe to the Husky header pipe per FMF's instructions.

I was counting on a 15 minute install but it turned into 45 minutes. Still not bad, though.

Just installed a Powercore on my TE511. Mine also smoked a bit at first after I shut it off. After the first couple of times I ran the bike it quit doing that, so I'm sure it was just some oil on the parts from manufacturing.
I also found the install to be a bit of a hassle. Exactly the same problems you had Mike. The pipe is on now though and seems to be fine. The bike definately sounds and runs better.

Happen to have the part number on the moose clamp? Im thinking of getting the FMF slip on and want everything I need just to install every thing at the same time.

You really do not need the clamp. It is a much tighter fit than stock. You just need to seal the joint with high temp sealant.

I don't have the part number. Threw away the bag. Just get the one that fits inch and three quarter pipe.
The dealer had mine the next day after ordering it.

The smell is totally normal, be sure that the fit is tight between the pipe and muffler to avoid poping on decel (air getting sucked back in)

Stock 80dB, Powercore4 120dB, Add Q-insert to get 114dB plus gives 2 HP. Q4 yields 95dB, but is $399 and only fits TC449 header.

Do you mean you gain 2 HP when adding the quietcore insert?

Does the quietcore insert work in conjunction with the spark arrestor?

Thanks for your help.

Do you mean you gain 2 HP when adding the quietcore insert?

Yes, a gain of 2HP when adding the quietcore insert. The Powercore4 is a straight through exhaust system and provides almost no back pressure which is needed by the 449/511s.
