    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

CR vs Wr 1982 250

They share the same engine numbers, but they are not the same. The '82 WR had a different cylinder, I dont remember the details (Joe Chod will know) but I think it had smaller transfers and had port timing for good low/mid. The 83 XC (I think) got the "new" CR cylinder, then the air cooled WR got it in 84, but it had a lower exhaust port than the '83 CR. I think that is all correct and its very confusing with mid-year changes all during those years.
 
Well...either way I'm going to use an '82 CR250 off road. Closed the deal so that's the next bike in the stable.
We'll see how it does but with a 6 speed I can gear it down as necessary.
 
I know a lot of east coast woods guys (Drew Smith in particular) who prefer the CR in the woods because of the closer gear ratios.

Yes, Drew has my 83 250CR, & also had my 83 250 XC, i always liked the CR was oh so much better in the Northeast woods

The difference between my 83 250wr and the 84 250wr with the cr ported cylinder is night and day. The 84 is like on steroids.

The 250cr we ran a smaller front sprocket. Down low she wound up quicker. You don't have to wind the snots out of a cr before you shift. The rpms stay up.
 
Well, hopefully that's what I'll get. I'm more of a tight woods rider. A little motocross would be fun too, but I tend to stay on the ground.
 
I don't have the port info, either, but I did research it at one time because the 82 250WR had more low end than the 83 250WR. If it helps, you can still get base gaskets in many thicknesses from Cometic. I use them all the time to set the deck height where I want it to be, and you can get a nice shifting of the torque curve.
 
Thanks Picklito. Can you explain this more? I know adding gasket height will lower your compression. How much change in the torque do you see?
 
It's a subtle change but noticeable. Thinner gasket will lower cylinder/lower port timing/increase compression/tighten squish distance. These all play toward more low end torque. Thicker gasket tends to shift toward higher rpm power. But these engines are a little loose on squish distance, so raising the cylinder really doesn't help them. I like to 'gasket them' to have .040" squish, and all the other numbers are really close this way and they run well.
 
My two '83 250wr's weren't bad they pulled good just weren't ballistic in response like a cr. The '84 250wr came with the cr Ported cylinder plus the wr tranny. It's a different ride than with the calm wr cylinder. It's the best ride ever for a wr 250.
On a 83/84 cr cylinder it has two extra openings that allow the gas mix to enter in front of the reeds.

You could port the 250wr cylinder.
 
that second one is NOT an 82-84....its earlier non primary motor....look at reeds.....thin bridge on side.....shape of fin outer perimeter.....all NOT 82 and up 250 A/C motor features. would fail on a police lineup for sure
 
Sorry your right book me Danno I have sinned. Lol but the base is missing those two transfer ports. That's my point it's the only wr example I could give. Dam u caught me on the reed cage. I had too much coffee today sorry.
 
Gathered a bunch of 250 engines. Now have a couple 82s a 83 and two 84 wrs with - 84s have the extra intake and exhaust ports. Should have them done - pistons and bores and couple new sleeves by end of feb
and put a couple together later spring bring at least one to Unadilla.

Oh hum m have two sets of 85 cr 5 speeds just wondering what how that would work ??

Sorry bill all 84 WR twin shocks have the lower added intake behind sleeve ports and the two extra drilled exhaust eye ports as standard.
 
Some days I feel like a cr ride and some days my old battered body likes a wr ride. But once you get use to the cr hit you will ride the cr more heck I moved up to the 390cr. Ride them all.
