• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Diagnostics using an Android Phone + Bluetooth

IMPORTANT !!

Update on my first real use of the App and adapter on the bike.
I can so far do the following:-

Read/Reset error codes on ECU, Dash and ABS unit.
Perform Control functions of various electronic Ecu controlled items such as Fuel Pump, Fan, Injectors, Stepper Motor etc.
Record Live data on all input and output parameters of the Ecu both when stationary and whilst on the road.

At the moment I have not been able to work out how to do the Fuelling adaptation, TPS and Idle actuator resets.

I have emailed the support at the software developers to find out how if possible to do it.

Will keep you all posted.

These are the MOST important functions....looking forward to hearing how you go. My OBD Link should be here Monday:) .

Pissed off is how i would describe it......

Email back from developer says these functions are not yet available !! So until he makes it available I am back to fault diagnosis and basic resets only.
Strange that on a BMW bike you can do everything, but not yet on a Husqvarna BMS-E set up.

Thats on the nose!, his web does not suggest that....poor form in my book. Did you pay him...? Has he given a time frame for completion?

The developer site indicates it does even less for the BMSE on the 650 GS/X models, R13 is the model designation for the GS

Engine control unit BMSE R13
ID
Read error codes
Delete error codes

They dont list Service Functions for any of the BMSE equipped models, Service Functions are the device test routines

Further info from the developer when I asked if and when it would be available...

We are constantly updating the software.

My mistake was when I checked the functionality on the website prior to buying, I read 'Actuators Control' and assumed it to mean I could at least do the TPS and Idle Actuator, but it does not. It means I can control Fan, Fuel Pump, Injectors etc.

Still, being able to diagnose faults if i am out on a longer ride without my Laptop is a positive. At least I can get to fix things if needed.

Actuators is important but "adaptions" is vital and this is where Motoscan is missleading us for now and hope in the short term they get included see below.

So I got by OBDLink LX and plugged it into Motoscan "lite" and here are some screen shots and yes you can do f*rk all, but it did identify my bike which was good.

I asked Motoscan when adaption reset and idle actuator calibration will be available and got quick reply:

Yes, it will be added, but at the moment I can not say when.

Best Regards

So, good to get a quick reply but who knows when it will be available..?? I'm going to point out to Motoscan their web is miss leading as it stands and they should amend or cough up..:).

This is really, really interesting. Kudos to Mark_H for taking the plunge and the others following on his trail. I'll probably wait until the Ultimate version becomes veritable. Before that, can anyone confirm that the motoscan can show the AFR from the lambda in real time?

OK guys, apart from the GS 911 I know there is also the DUONIX piece of kit that can also do everything for the bikes. (www.duonix.de)

However, I was recommended an App for Android called MOTOSCAN as it is very much cheaper and works just as well.
Downloaded the Lite version for free then set about finding a suitable Bluetooth Adapter with cable for the bike.
The cable is simple, just search eBay for ICOM D cable and there are plenty to choose from, mine cos $10.
Bluetooth adapter is a different story and I went through several cheap ones before I found one that can do everything.
Having checked the Lite version of MOTOSCAN can indeed handle the TR650 and my Nuda I purchased the ULTIMATE licence at $44
The cheap BT Adapters can communicate and read the bike but they cannot handle the long text protocol that BMW requires to perform the resets of fueling adaptations etc.
The one that works with all functions is Scantool 427201 OBDLink Bluetooth and is on Amazon at $63

So there you have it, total outlay of $117 gives me the perfect mobile solution to diagnosing and setting up the bike.
Understand that because Apple products cannot communicate by Bluetooth properly, MOTOSCAN is Android only.
For Apple there is a similar App called Carly but I have no idea if it works or not.

Mark, how come you mention the ICOM D cable since the adaptor is Bluetooth, what is the cable for?

Im pretty sure the bike does not have obd2 so you need the icom d cable to go from the bike to the obd2 scanner

Correct, the bike does not have a standard OBD2 connector, it has a BMW ICOM D instead, although the protocols are the same.
Cable is indeed needed to go from round Female Icom D to square(ish) female OBD2 connector.

dont get excited, I got the gear got it connected but it does nothing, pissed me off. Has there been any change to this anyone...?

Kiwiape, are you still getting no response from the OBD2?

Ok when I last tried (above) I could link with bike ok, but the software is not complete and you cant do anything. I emailed the dev. and he was f'n useless...so I tossed it into the corner in disgust and have not gone back...has something changed...? I'll try mine again when I get a chance.

Mark, excellent work!

I do see quite a few references to doing this in some of the Amazon reviews for the BMW ICOM D cables using Motoscan.

I was looking at this cable that had good reviews on Amazon. It's a short one like WGSoft offers.

Question, can you reset the service minder?

It's all worth if if you can do the TPS and Idle actuator resets and still pretty valuable to do the service minder reset plus read/clear error codes.
