  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Did my fuel pump go bad?

i went to go ride this morning and i turned the key on as usual, went through process of starting, but the fuel pump never cycled!! i checked the fuses and all was good there!! there is no codes flashing and how can i tell if it is bad. my closest dealer is 2.5 hours away and i have always done my own work on all my bikes. how much is a new pump? i am open to anyones advice.

i have had other issues on this bike and always been able to deal with them. i have about 2500 miles on this bike and really enjoy it but i have never had a carburated bike act up on me like this thing. i put 1400 miles in http://www.cafehusky.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9326 so i kind of know what i am doing. just realy getting frustrated with this thing!!

all suggestions are welcome,
thanks

I would pull the pump out and check the wiring. Did you already fix the slipping fuel pump problem? Be very careful of the plastic fuel line nipple on the fuel pump. Easy to break if you drop the tank and very tough or expensive to fix.

yes it is bad. there was a bunch of gray/silver fine goop in the filters. i took it apart and could get the pump to spin backwards. i was then able to get it to spin forwards, but on occasion i had to tap it with a wrench to get it to start. i must thank George from uptite for his help. thank you. my diagnosis is the pump is going bad and the goop is from the pump. since i can't get the pump, the whole module will cost me $499.00:thumbsdown: i can see a carbuerated bike in my near future and it might be orange. kind of a bummer because i like the bike, but i don't like 500 clams if the pump goes bad.

OUCH and YIKES Why are the pumps so expensive?I guess anything that has to do with new technology,is both proprietary and expensive.

Assemblies seem to be the trend for a lot of equipment these days. $600 to replace a $50 pump! Kind of surprised a resourceful soul hasn't come up with a retrofitted pump. Must be a less expensive ATV, Motorcycle or auto pump that can be used to replace the failed pump without replacing the whole assembly. Being the cheapo that I am I would certainly exhaust all the possibilities before shelling out $600.

Thats too bad when the ugly side of the world rears it's head at you... :( ... At east U were at home and not off in the boonies somewhere ... I'll stay CARBed 4 life just to avoid this ...

Something to consider....... Out of all FI'd Huskies out there, how many report a working fuel pump here or on other forums? It's not a carb for sure but the instances of actual bad pumps are pretty rare. I've been there to witness a dead pump 1st hand, and it is indeed a show stopper. That's what riding buddies are for if you are in remote stuff. If you're alone, you asked for it IMO. I'm on my 2nd FI and will contnue with the technology on future bikes. If you're out lone wolfing in the sticks, FI is just one of many disasters waiting to occur.

I don't think this site or any \ all others added up make much of a data set for finding the % of FI \ efi failures ... Funny U mentioned a failure also ... That is one more than I knew about ... Without UR replay ..another hidden break down .... See the point on this data set is flawed?

U probably missed the collapse of the usa monetary system a couple years back, lots of different aspects on it but one idea, risk management, was mentioned often. If you missed, U missed a very good, real life learning experience ...

I see this as risk management ... Why risk added technology that is really not needed? CARB bikes still go in and out of the woods, correct? What % can you actually measure efi over a CARB? I can only see the jetting problems at different attitudes as any thing really measurable on these different types of fuel delivery to this ~150 yr old technology motor... U can always drag in emissions ....

I can't pay > $ 100 on repairs much less what ever this replacement is ... Again this is risk management on my part ...

efi is great ... just not for me ... Not that is matters but I think Husky still has a CARB on its racer models ... Someone mentioned on one of the other threads that ktm was CARBing a bike and racing it (ama outdoors or maybe the outdoors series in EU) but the released model will have EFI... Sounds a little weird to me ...

PS -- I only ride with studs to the boonies ... Ever been to GPNF? ... we always bring each other home :) ...

My FI might strand me someday, but the carb on my WRF made me want to quit riding all together. If your handy with carbs, they're probably the way to go, if your not, FI becomes your best friend. I've clocked nearly 5k miles on a dirt bike FI sys between my husky and a Yamaha I had pretty much with out a single hiccup.

I would expect no problems but I'm not worried about the good times ...they take care of themselves ... The negative cases are the times for concern...

it's not carbs versus efi. it is the fact that no one has a pump i can throw in my pack for when it happens.i know George at uptite is working on one. i can't think the pump could actually cost that much?

I wonder if any of the ATV or marine engined 4T would have a comparable fuel pump. Could be worth looking into......
