• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

A Class
ok here goes ... being as it is looking like an expensive rebuild of the gearbox ...what other engines have people shoe horned into an 84 frame !!
yz 490 ...yz 465 ..cr 480 ..kx 500..
am looking at 2strokes really and 500 ish, any ideas or suggestions ....

With the Chain and Kickstart being on the opposite side as the Japanese Bikes of the same vintage this is going to be a very involved project. I would think that all of the avalable engines would sell for about the same price, including the Husqvarna. If the Main Cases are OK on the Motor You have it should be repairable, however a replacement Engine may be less, but it may not be better than what You have now. The value of a newer Water Cooled engine may be less than the Air cooled one you have, and may have an improved Transmission that would swap right into the Engine You have. One way or another, the know how and the parts are probably avalable on this web sight.

OOps, forgot they went LC the year after. I notice the cheapest running bikes are the Yamahas 465 and 490 but I am constantly looking for complete open class MX engines and as you probably know they don't come up too often. Buying a running Yamaha for the engine then breaking it? I bought a 430 barrel and piston from a guy in the US who was breaking a number of Husky engines can't find his details at the moment but I will have a look, might be worth contacting.

It was user thirtybee on Ebay.com he has some 500 gearbox stuff on at the moment. The bits he sold me were not listed though, worth mailing him to see what he has. I'm trying to find the article that I'm sure was in CDB with the 83 500 with a 490 motor in it. Swapped the subframe and the swingarm, looked good.

When I get to finishing the Humph I'll post the pictures. A 78 WR roller with a Triumph 500 unit twin. Almost anything will fit in a Husky frame. But I always think the best motor is a Husky one.

hear what your saying guys , i have to pop down and see andy at hva but i think the answer is going to be something i wont like . i have this idea of sticking a yz 490 motor in !! to be honest what i really want to do is have something a bit lower with a 500 motor in it . i do a few twinshock meetings but i have to confess i enjoy the building /fettling/repairing/project more i think . something will pop up i'm sure and you never know what will apppear at telford .

Ahhh .... Telford ! There was a 500AE there last year. I reckon £1k would have got it too. I had to walk away :(

There is no way a Yamaha 465/490 motor with left hand drive will work in a Husky frame...

... unless you put in the yz rear wheel in too!

Not sure you'll find one easy in the UK though. YZs seem common and cheap, think the spares are cheap too (having just paid a small fortune for one husky kickstart gear).
thats why ive considered an engine swap , will have to get the back order when i go to telford .just got to find a yz 490 ....

If your going to go that route, I think most people consider the 465 5 speed to be better than the 490 4 speed. A little easyer to start, easyer to jet and one more gear.
