    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

2010 te250, did a little 95 mile high country singletrack ride saturday, part way through the day the clutch started dragging to the point of stalling. towards the end of the ride is a several mile steep climb with gobs of switchbacks, and i worked the bike hard getting up there.

changed the oil and filter and it still dragged. just tore into it to see what i could see. some brownish coloration and a few small particles. i wish i had looked at it before to check the color.

i pulled the plates, and after reassembling everything worked fine... dropped it into gear and the clutch was free as a bird. riding around the driveway the drag came back, but only slightly, so it seems functional.

Were you slipping the clutch alot on that hill?

Can't tell much from a pic in terms of anything conserning- does appear to have oil residue rather than being "clean" which could come from heat. I have not had to inspect my clutch on the husky- what is that notch at the center of the hub pointed to 7:00? That does not look normal to me....

Grabbyness in my experience comes from warped, or glazed plates. Or the basket or hub has notches or grooves making the plates not slide properly. Some older ktms had a lack of oil flow to the outside plates and they'd simply stick to the hub due to heat and the oil sludge would build up.

I would take the plates back out and check for warped plates- against a true flat surface such as flat glass. Sort out warped ones if that's the case and replace as needed. May be glazed- you can sand them down to deglaze and take off the polished surface- like you would a brake rotor.

You could also check for minimum thickness and that the springs are still in spec- I don't have the specs on your bike to tell you what to check for.
 
I would say warped plates or you just glazed the fibers up...alot of times when you heat the clutch up it just warps the steels...depending on how many miles are on it to it could be grooves in the outer or inner basket....that keeps the plates from moving up and down freely...
 
Yep, pull the plates and check for trueness.If true and in spec, Scotchbites the steels and clean off the fibre plates and let them soak overnight in fresh clean oil and refit. It might be time to bleed and refresh your clutch hydraulics too.
 
Not saying it is the situation here, but what happens if a non-motorcyle rated oil is used? I have always heard that the prime reason is the engine oil is also the clutch oil. I thought it was the anti friction additives in non-rated oil that caused slippage, clearly not the case here. Or are there other nasty side effects depending on what kind of oil is used? Just curious and trying to learn.
 
Non motor bike specific oil may contain substances that will induce the clutch to slip. These "friction modifiers" may not necessarily make a clutch slip immediately but may have a comulative effect over a short period. There are however some non specific bike oils that many use in their bikes that seem to work. I believe that they are typically oils produced for automotive diesel engines. There are lots of historical "oil" posts in this site that specify which brands work and which do not. Also what data needs to be listed on the container to make it useable/safe. I have however, only ever used specifically designed bike oil. My approach has been to buy a good mid priced oil like a Motul, maxima, Bel ray and change it out after every third ride (300 miles) and change the oil filter every second oil change. On that premise there is no need to spend the extra bucks for an oil like Motorex imho.
 
yep, slipping the clutch plenty on that hill. i haven't been re-flashed yet, so it needs the rpm's wrapped up some to get some grunt out of it. i heard this week the reflash will be ready soon.

after that i'll decide if i want to go from 13 to 12 tooth cs sprocket - running 13-52 now.

current oil is maxima. 712 miles. the notch at 7 o'clock is cast in.


AND FURTHERMORE...
last friday did a ride with a heinous slate rock climb which really worked the bike. a friend, better rider than me, rode the same section the next day and tore a ligament in his knee stepping off at the top of a step-up - standing beside the bike in balance, all looked good, then his knee buckled and grew to twice it's normal size... kind of a nasty place.

pulled the clutch pack out again today. is it bad when the fiber rectangles come off the plate?! :-0 cleaned and checked the plates against a glass, oiled 'em up and re-assembled... felt nice at the beginning, then began it's little drag game again, but not too bad. i'm debating whther to ride it tomorrow just for giggles to see how it does.
