  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

f#$@.....10 minute job=5 hours and counting

Yep, finally gonna try the butterfly thingy myself. But only if Ty gets my suspension dialed in time to test it so I can go back before the Checkers HnH on the 22.

If you're going to race it, I would. I would also consider a power-commander 5 in conjunction to that.

Butterfly is removed. Damn......they must of used little elves to put motor, wiring and air box in!!! Will the EFI adjust for butterfly being gone? Power Commander looks nice but I'm going to try the JD programmer again and see if I can get it to work right. Any idea of HP #'s on the TXC 449? Any idea what top speed of these bikes with 15/49 gearing is? Can't wait to get this bike in the dirt!
Tinken.....how do I get the last .150 of oil in bike? I was able to get 1 full quart in motor but it was topped off.
Thanks!!

Efi does not compensate for the in rush of air when the throttle is snatched open. JD tuner will help a lot (not to sound like I'm overly pushing the pc5, Motomummy has a good deal on them), but the JD is unable to fully tune like the pc5. Hp depends on exhaust, air box, fuel metering. For the oil, I measure out 1200-1300cc's. On the kick stand, I fill to the top of the threads. Start the engine for 30 seconds and fill the rest. The oil galleries hold between 250-300cc of oil. Stainless steel oil filters are a big plus. I'm working on a TL fix as well.

Many bikes need zero tuning for the BF removal. Mine did not. Some people cant tell the difference some say snappier power which might be good or bad depending on you and your riding. I have the JD and BF removed and aftermarket exhaust. The Exhaust required a lot of tuning to get it to run well.

Or you can try my trick. I put a regular small hose clamp on the return line so when I do an oil change, I just slip a small funnel in and slowly fill it with the whole 1300cc.

It's been decided we are racing the TXC 449 the 21rst in Laughlin Nv for the BITD race. It was between my pimped out race ready KLX450 or Husky. Partner and I decided to be different. Can I get 40 miles at desert race pace out of stock tank? Loops are 18 miles in length. I sure hope we can at least get 40 miles. We'll be racing in the 30 Expert class......sucks having a younger partner!! I'll be 46 in April. I need to race the old man class!

I just did the one loop version of the DMC HNH on the 25th. 35 miles of mixed wide open and technical terrain and I was just dipping into the front tank. I think I actually had the bottom end set a little too rich with my JD. Of course YMMV.

I've owned both the JD and PowerCommander (on my TE). Butterfly removed. The JD was okay. The TE requires a high value for the Accelerator Pump setting (Red/Blue IIRC). Especially with the BF removed, a value of 7 or more will be key. I would be willing to bet that the TXC is similar.
When I had a chance to pick up a used PowerCommander and AutoTune I decided to try it. It transformed the bike. With the JD + Map #3, I still got unpredictable flame-outs, just less of them. With the PowerCommander they are gone and the bike runs so much better than before. Instant go everywhere in the RPM range.

Ignition map!

these bikes have a very large throttle body, not by todays standards but they do for the stock power they produce. It is restricted heavily by the dual butterfly setup AND by the airbox. The air filter design is also garbage and mine always had dirt/dust behind the filter. What I did was trim the factory velocity stack/rubber elbow in diameter and I clamp on a uni pod filter with outerwear and just zip tie the damn thing over the rubber elbow. Throttle body is clean like new, zero restriction, and comes off in 2 seconds by just pulling the seat to cut 2 zip ties. In addition I have used tinkens ignition advance map and then also went and smoothed it out at lower rpms just for ocd sake. These 2 mods turned the bike from "ok" to one of the fastest/highest revving bikes I have owned. The bike lacks low end torque as you can imagine with a wide open exhaust and intake, but it revs to the limiter and pulls hard all the way there. It has an incredible amount of "overrev" which is what makes it fast. The lack of low end torque is overcome by some revs' and a slip of the clutch.

It is not bad for a 477cc bike.

Ok......sitting here with JD tuner in my hand wondering if I should hook it up or is more trouble than it's worth. How much will it help the TXC motor? The TXC motor, from what I've read, is quite a bit stronger than TE model. Reviews of TXC people really liked the TXC motor and that was stock. I've got an FMF exhaust, 2nd butterfly removal, ZipTy oil recirculation kit and modified Swiss cheese air box. I would rather have a fast smooth motor than a rocketship.

I have the txc and used the jd tuner before I installed my bazzaz with afm auto tune. I live at 5000ft elevation and found the jd tuner helped a lot, mostly by taking fuel out of the top end. At this elevation the stock txc curves were rich. Nice thing about the jd is you can experiment as you go. You can definitely tell if it's working with a seat of the pants assessment. I mounted mine on the back of front number plate so i didn't have to remove the seat to access it while riding.

Sounds like you're interested in top speed and the jd tuner will definitely help optimize top end performance for your specific bike config.

Ps I've had my butterfly in and out a couple times. With the txc, butterfly in gives nice smooth power delivery. Butterfly out gives much improved snap and wheelie capability. Depends what you're after. I'm biased toward leaving it out after much experimentation.

When you pull the butterfly out you have to turn the brass screw on the throttle body out to increase the idle speed and keep the engine from flaming out at low rpm.

I get around 43 miles if I am really running hard, stop and go accel. PCV would be key for BITD race. You will need to gear up a little, 15/48 most likely.

That's a good location. I also opted to mount mine where I could tweak it while out riding. So I put it on my handlebars mount bracket. There were several times where I stopped on the trail within 5 minutes after starting for the day to make adjustments. Usually this happened when I fiddled with stuff at home, 500' elevation, that effected airflow then trucked the bike to the trails at 2500' elevation. If it was under the seat, I probably wouldn't have made my friends wait for me to pull the seat and make some adjustments.

I really like the JD, it is more simple than the Dynojet for sure but can make very good improvements and can be tuned in seconds on the trail.

Ok guys......took TXC out for a quick spin last night. Bike started right up and idled perfect after butterfly removal. 1rst thing I noticed was with the 15/49 gearing this bike is not going to like slow and technical terrain. I'm ok with that. Have my YZ250FX and KLX450 for that. KLX can run a goat trail in first and still hit 100 mph without changing sprockets. Bike ran perfect. No hiccups, flameouts or misses on top end. Tried to get it to flame out...no luck. Bike seemed to have sufficient power at my altitude of 6900'. Bike could break rear tire loose in 4th gear with a little throttle. I'm still debating putting the JD on today. I read instructions and my ADD kicked on when trying on read on how to program it. We will be heading down to 1500' in altitude for race. Will I have to mess with JD to get it right? Last time JD was on bike missed terrible at high RPM's.
