  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

FE/FC FE501 stock exhaust

The 450s accelerate quicker and are faster on the top end, regardless of gearing (That's the FC's, SX's and KX's, etc). No the 501 cannot pull the taller gearing, tried and tested. It's not just the engine, it's the intake/airbox, efi, sub-frame/rear suspension setup and exhaust. The FE501 is a smooth, comfortable, good riding bike. It's not the fastest Husky or the best for racing. But it's great tractor for the average rider.

exactly in line with what most racers tell me.

anyone swapped out the endcap on one of these exhausts?

I have a 500exc and I can feel the restriction (and heat) being held in by the can. And I'd rather not spend $400 on a new system.
Do the BDS or PMB end caps truly open up the breathing on these engines?

It has to -you're completely removing that welded in screen for a much more open design. I just put the Bds on my new 500exc, along with the jd tuner and zipty waterless coolant. Haven't had a Chance to try it out yet except for riding around the neighborhood. It definitely ran really hot before so I hope this cures it.

I already removed that outermost 'sink strainer' screen and it does help, but not as much as I'd like to see. Bike is still very restrictive feeling and HOT....even with the TPS bumped and JD tuner sending lots of fuel. It's just a very restrictive exhaust and am wondering if the end cap really makes a difference or not. thanks!

You need to pull the muffler apart as there is another one inside it!!! Have a look with a torch light.
Just removing the end cap doesn't do much with the other one still inside.
It's a double cone shaped mesh, to remove it do as follows. (can't believe no one on here knows this.... my dealer actually told me to remove it)
Take of the muffler.
Wear rubber or nitrile gloves and a mask as fiberglass is bad for your lungs and hard to get out of your skin!!
Undo the bolts holding the cap on and pull it apart. The perforated pipe in the middle is where you need to get to.
Where the weld is that hold the cone mesh is make a small cut with a grinder or saw to break the weld.
Wack the stupid thing out with a piece of pipe or similar.
Assemble back together. The quicker you do this from new the better as the fiberglass is packed in a plastic wrapper, if it's still there it holds it together.

Once this crap is out the exhaust is not very restrictive at all!
Take the mesh out of the air filter support too for more oomph or get a 2 stroke one, they don't have the mesh. ($20 bucks or something)

I'd drop the TPS back down to stock levels and add fuel with your tuner. Advancing the tps, advances the timing. This will aid to making your bike run really hot and could lead to failure.
