    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

FIM bans action cameras

Just announced, the FIM have put a temporary ban on the use of all on-board cameras that are mounted on riders.
It’s a sweeping statement that includes all cameras – not just specifically GoPro products – and relates to action sport cameras mounted on a rider’s helmet or chest.
Cameras are allowed to be mounted on the motorcycle.
This means events such as next week’s ISDE, the upcoming SuperEnduro World Championship, EWC and also the Motocross World Championship and any other FIM sanctioned event will see the use of action sports camera severely limited until further notice.
The announcement has most likely come in the wake of the news that Michael Schumacher’s skiing injury was rumoured to be caused/or intensified due to a GoPro mounted to his helmet.
Well-renowned French F1 journalist Jean Louis Moncet initially suggested the camera was partly to blame but has since backtracked stating that it was just his own opinion.




Here’s the announcement recently issued by the FIM…
“Dear All,

The FIM Board Members have decided to prohibit temporarily On-Board cameras on the riders (helmets, plastrons etc.) in all FIM Championships.
On-Board cameras are authorized on motorbikes only.
Please take that into consideration for the ISDE 2014.

Fact- I have volountarily (SP?) removed my GoSlo from my helmet, I had modified fishing leader tethers for it in case it got knocked off.
I removed it from the top of my helmet after passing under a tree at speed and really tweaking my neck, guys I'm no pussy it really jammed up my neck and I was in duck mode so it was actually worse coming all the way from head over the bars ducked down to face looking at the sky!. It just ripped my head back and did not separate the cam from the mount. Seriously could have cracked a C. Before and after that I always ran the thing on the side of helmet in that triangle between top of helmet and shoulder but even there the thing gets hung on branches. So I bought the "Chesty" I think this is the safest way to carry the cam, besides bike mounted. IMHO this is a personal responsibility issue, but Action cam companies should simply engineer in a better break away system like ski bindings type deal.
 
I guess I still struggle with the elimination of personal responsibility for our actions. I chose to wear it but it is someone else's fault that I was hurt due to mounting issues or the fact you let me wear it in a dangerous situation. Where is the end to the lack of personal responsibility. Too bad our society is managed by lawyers and their minions.
 
I think on a personal level wally is right. As faras the pros go, i think it's nice they are sticking up for their safety. Intial reports in the schumacher accident suggested the helmet camera may have made the injury worse then it should have been. Surprised it took an organization this long to do something about it. This isnt the fim looking for money, it's going to advance safety for not only our pros but should also trickle down to us.
 
I disliked the ontop mounts from day one, i mount my replay under the peak on my visor lots of ducking and woods riding made me aware of the dangers of top mount camera, to ban them from being on the rider is crazy buut if they bike mount i bet the technology of image stability will be updated so probably a good side affect.

I have a Sony action cam that is mounted on my goggle strap. I can mount it up top if I'd like, but decided it is too vulnerable up there.
I've seen guys loose their gopros off the top several times when out riding trails, but am yet to snag the Sony on anything at the side despite riding in over-grown country.
Typical big-brother crap if you ask me, riding is dangerous, we all do it.
A camera isn't likely to make it better or worse.
I believe it has more to do with exclusive tv rights or some such agenda.
 
Simple self preservation on the part of FIM. If somebody gets hurt/killed/whatever wearing a camera their DB lawyer can claim that if they were prohibited in competition in the first place, their client wouldn't have suffered blah blah blah.

Deep pockets are getting scared of lawsuits in today's litigious society of panty waists that refuse to take personal responsibility.
 
Time a manufacturer made the 'flat' cam. The lenses are small enough to allow. This under a universal helmet spoiler would not only be aerodynamic.

Helmet mounted cams is responsible for my increase in data usage. Just awesome! Watch 'HardEnduro' etc and tell me if you disagree!

From the first time I spotted a cam mounted to the top I thought hmmm as I have mine mounted to the side.

Ive got replay xd 720 brilliant bit of kit once on Vimeo looks better than go pro and no rattly case, the prime xd is wifi enabled so you can stream to your phone on the trail viewing playback or help set up also remote record will be on the cards in the future. Good camera good product good price and low profile mounts all good
