• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

This is probably a very Noobish question but I need some advice from all you salty Dogs out there.

In the bush at high speed the other day I didn't see a rut until…. Well I more felt it actually in the end :D

Anyways the result is that I have a minor dent in my front wheel rim as you can see.

I have been riding for around 25years and I've never done this before so please, be kind.

Do I need to worry about this or is it safe to leave it ? And if I do need to fix it, how do I go abut it ?

Your sage advice and only moderate mocking is greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that. How did it happen? Does it vibrate? is both sides bent?

I would pull the tire and try a rubber hammer, then check the spokes for tightness. If you choose to try and straighten it, do lots of research before you start hammering. If it don't wobble or shake or vibrate, no worries.

If you wish, Mistaandypants has or had some stock rims for sale in this thread http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/my...log-and-look-what-happened.36878/#post-360230 and it will be alot of tedious work to respoke the new rim.

 
i once did a similar thing to an F800 rim. several solid blows with a 5lb lump hammer took care of it. Wasn't perfect, but went down the road without any noticable vibration. Someone's selling some Terra rims in the classified section btw.
 
I've had worse on another bike & didn't notice any difference in handling. I had a quote from a tyre shop for $80 to rectify it & true the wheel. So it shouldn't be a major spend if you want it fixed. I ended up just living with the dents.
 
Great Advice, thanks Gents. It happened as I hit a rut at reasonable speed, I guess the weight of the bike etc was just a bit much.

It doesn't vibrate, and only one side is bent. Sounds like I could just leave it.

leave it but i always find that bending it with a spanner is more accurate than bashing it too far the other way.
reducing the amount of shock load to any operation is better that creating more.

just my two pennies.
p.s. if you do bend it protect your rim so you dont ding it
 
I agree, grab it with a crescent/shifter and a rag and gently bend it back. hitting your bike with a hammer should be the last resort.

Honestly though if you cant feel it while riding, and its not leaking air just run it.
 
I did the same thing on this @ 65mph in the dark:

Rim is bent... no wobble though.
But I now have an easy spot to get the tire spoon in there.
 
Nope, just air the tire down, hold it against the corner of a solid building or wall, smack it and be done. Use all proper technique and protection. Air it back up and check the spokes.

As far as running like it is, that is fine if you do not do dirt or water. That stuff will work its way behind the rim and cause problems. I just fixed a Kawi rim that had problems. Dirt forced the bead from sealing proper and dirt was in the tire and bead.
