• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Front End Forks Swap YZ

fair enough, not disagreeing with your logic there
for me I like the extra travel for the emergency moments and also to make adjustments for when I load a lot of gear on it.
Also my attention span is pretty short so 5-600 km over a couple of days is enough for me.
Probably should have bought a KTM 690

Possibly the KTM might be perfect - I've done Olary to Nyngan in one day, a bit over 900klms, comfortably, I endeavour to keep dirt less than 500klms in daylight hours (we have Kangaroos, Emus, Camels, Pigs, Cattle, Horses & the occasional Koala bear to dodge once the sun sets, Oh & did I mention the Wedge-tailed Eagles?)

God's Own Northern Beaches - Pie in the Sky - Bells Line of Road, Bilpin one sunny day ??

Just to update the YZ fork swap as Im not lying in a ditch yet.
My front brake is getting better as the new pads wear into the old disc. It needs a harder squeeze than the original but pulls up fine even on the tarmac - easy to lock it up in the dirt with 2 fingers
The front end seems quite a bit lighter than the original , much better handling on the road as well.

Still a big supporter, is no one else game to KYB their Terra?

I'm looking for parts now. I did find a place that makes custom axles so I can keep the stock wheel. I am going to call them Monday and see what they say. It appears it might be around 100.00 dollars for an axle and 25.00- 30.00 for the machined spacers.

Ok I understand what you are saying. Here is the million dollar question: If you owned a Husky TR650 and wanted to install a set long travel forks, what would you do? What model forks including the brand, year, and triple clamps, wheel, brakes etc? Also how much for your parts? Please answer ALL question thoroughly. Thanks Shawn. P.S. When my forks finally wear out I will either replace the parts or buy another pair off Ebay for $150.00.

As my 3 year old daughter would say, "Calmlax". What you've done will work just fine.
The only thing I would do differently is get the Husky lower triple machined out. But that's only because it would bother me.
The YZ brakes will work for 95% of everyday riding. Just keep it in the back of your mind though if you ride heavily loaded or down a long mountain pass!

Just wandering how folks are getting along with their forks conversions. Baddrapp, Drzcharlie……..anyone else in the throws of this conversion?

I got mine done. I used the yz wheel and brake caliper. I used the stock master cylinder with a 53" brake line. According to my highly accurate bathroom scale, the yz wheel is 5 pounds lighter then the BMW wheel. I had the fork travel limited by 50mm to match the sachs compressed length.

The bike is way more stable. I hit 100 mph with no front wheel wobble. Straight as an arrow. I have done a little offroading, but it has been cold. I should have a complete ride report in the next couple of weeks.

I had Dave at Get Dirty Dirt Bikes limit the travel. We did not change the valving or springs. So far it has been great.

Thanks for the response, sounds promising. Especially the speed report. Any improvement on front end jitters a huge plus here. Do you happen to know the spring rating as it sits currently?

Yep no troubles with the triples so far, Ive been using the stock yz brake but am getting an axle made to use the original Brembo stup and front wheel. The YZ disc and wheel ive got are not in the best shape, getting the caliper hanger from Aquatic.
These forks are an amazing improvement, better everywhere
