    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Front Wheel Bearing Removal

Hello all. I am restoring a 1982 430 XC. It had a broken kickstart idler gear and was parked in a barn for 20 years. Overall condition is very nice. I wish to replace the wheel bearings and I am a little stumped by the bearing retainer on the front wheel. Is it supposed to pull straight out with the bearing or is it threaded? So far my blind puller has not removed it and PC124465.JPG I don't want to pound on the back of the bearing un-necessarily hard. Thank you.IMG_3815[1].JPG
 
Well. I couldn't wait any longer. I heated the hub with a torch and pulled the bearing locator cap with a blind puller. It was very tight, but it came out. The bearing was too tight to pull, so I pounded it out from the back. Nothing damaged. Now I can blast and powder coat the hub. Cheers.
 
Wow Dean awesome to see you are near me. Would of thought it would be under a ton of snow out there at this time of year.
What do you normally ride? Have you ever seen me at Mcleans being there every Saturday lol?
How long have you had this 430, i sold mine in the early 90s, a 82 430 XC and i know there were many, but i still believe it would be a runner still as i left it mint when i let it go.

That's an awesome pic of the Husky's in Waiparous! You must be pretty hard core to ride one of these monsters in the bush. We were up there last weekend and there was only about 2-4" of snow. My regular ride is a '17 Husky 300TE. A great bush bike. I just finished building an IT465 for the ice, but Ghost won't be frozen over for another month. I'll PM you and we can chat some more. Here's a pic of the front hub with the bearing and retainer pulled out. No idea what the 2 roll pins are for.

Wish I knew that when I replaced the bearings on my XC. Took a lot of effort and I was sure something was going to break pounding them out. I ending up doing the same thing with some trepidation.
 
sharp edged long round punch in thru 1 bearing to the other side, push the centre spacer enough to get an edge on the bearing and tap away rotating 180 degrees every few taps
 
dont forget to slip the plastic seal of the new bearing and repacking them with waterproof grease:thumbsup:..use the old bearing as a driver to knock the new ones in...shimples
