• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Good mechanic for the tr650? NSW Newcastle/Hunter?

Hi Guys, I've got a bit of a knock in my motor, it started quiet but is getting louder over about the last 1000kms.

At first i thought it was bad fuel but its doing the same with fuel from 3 places.. Oil is clean, plugs were changed about 500kms ago.

It sounds a bit like valves need adjusting but now its sounding more like piston slap.. the bike feels like its down on power to and today i could hear loud pinging when giving it some gas but it only did it a couple of times.

Anyway i fixed my own cars all my life but not 110% sure if ive got all the tools I'll need to fix whatever is wrong with it so im thinking of putting it into a good mechanic.. I live in Abermain NSW and keen to hear if any of you have had some luck with a good mechanic somewhere around Newcastle/Hunter? I'll take it to Sydney if there is a good mechanic working wonders on these.

Hi Hulksta,

I found my bikes are more fussy about the quality of fuel than the service stations. Something to keep in mind.

Our Huskys are a tuned Rotax engine, the same as the BMW singles, except they go harder.

Can't recommend a mechanic as it depends on how much work they have, how much experience and how interested.

Had Brisons in Tighes Hill do a service and were very professional and would be familiar with the engine, same with Chris Watson the Husqvarna dealer at Cessnock. (how interested they may be is another matter)

I've been in contact with Rock Cycles at Port Macquarie, BMW & Husqvara dealer (amongst other brands) who said they could update the ecu but have not had it verified.

Very little help, but you now know what I know about good mechanics.

John

You guys down under seem to have a bigger issue with this than USA models.

Are you running a fuel enhancement device? spoofer etc?

It's not sounding like a cheap fix, but you should have enough tools to tear it apart if you are mechanically inclined. Good torx, probably a good impact wrench or you may have to custom make some holding wrenches if you have to go deeper than the top end.

For you guys, once popping it apart I would recommend the thicker head gasket to drop the compression a bit. http://www.cometic.com/ I have talked to them and they have the jigs to make em for the bmw so they can make it for the husky. You just need to figure the thickness to achieve the compression you are comfy with.

No spoofer, i was told not to waist my money.. ive been over the bike done the sealing of the airbox and the K&N filter.. just haven't opened it up but cost starts to jump and im not sure its worth it, im starting to think I'll just go get a DR and part this thing out, its been a lemon of a bike :( But I'll take it to the dealer and get their opinion on the noise.

I've had issues with pinging which I put down to fuel quality. It's like rolling the dice after every refueling even though I use a high volume garage and 95. Put a half a tank of 98 this afternoon and had no issues on a trip to Sydney and back other than it went like a rocket.

The reason I went to Sydney was to buy and fit a set of crash bars. When fitting the crash bars the right hand side (as your sitting on it) upper engine mount was not torqued up (not much more than finger tight). It has been reported in this, or adv R forum, but have not been able to locate any references.

Might be worth a check before doing anything else.

I had this same issue. Except I found out when I was looking over the bike and noticed the bolts from both sides were missing

I periodically run octane boost in my Terra. It seems to run better, and the fuel economy increase is worth the small price for the boost. If you guys are having the ping issue, might be worth your time and money to always use it. It may save an expensive repair in the future.

Hi John, Im keen to try anything ATM, I'll check the mounts in the morning, I did notice the bike has a lot more vibration than normal.. The vibration (like a harmonic vibe) started shortly after i bought the bike and ive just kind of assumed its the bike and put up with it (my te510 is much the same) and i know its the motor cause at 100kph i put the clutch in and its like a push bike rolling down the road smooth as... then ive noticed the engine getting louder and louder over the last 3-4weeks.. today i took it for a 100k run with some 98ron in it and i didnt hear any pinging like the other day but the noise continues.

One thing i remembered last night is the last oil change i used 10/40wt as the shop didnt have 10/50wt, he said it wont make any difference... I know im my supercharged GT falcon i notice small changes in oil wt so maybe the bike is the same?? But I'll check the bolts tomorrow, are they at the back of the cylinder? Your pic is tiny lol

Do ones for cars work on bikes too? Maybe i might look for some injector cleaner too.

I would think any octane boost should be fine. I buy the stuff at our dollar stores, and add 1-2 oz per tank when I remember. Nothing fussy, just to help out a little. I don't think you need to run cleaner, most fuels of the day have that stuff in it. Maybe a little seafoam, but sparingly.

Mine sounds like a big over-square single with fueling issues.

Appears as if we rely on the same suppliers of oil & fuel. I am running 10w40 also and I also have a knocking sound coming from the engine which I put down to the fueling issue. It does not appear to be coming from the crank, it is not getting any worse and I'm sure one of my riding companions would have pointed it out. I can't remember the knock prior to changing the oils, so you're onto something there. I've been seriously looking at replacing the oil with 10w50 before the heat of summer hits anyway.

The 'not tight engine bolt' was the one at the top which threads into the head but it would be worthwhile checking them all.

Have a GPR exhaust (amazing what getting rid of the heavy standard mufflers does for the handling), AFXIED on setting five (no more random stall ( just predictable stalls when cold which I can live with ), Pulstar Plugs (no improvement but one could be faulty as there a miss when cold).

Well I took my own advice and torqued up the engine mounts.

The head mounts were no where near what the should have been and the front and back mounts were a bit under according to my 30 year old never been certified torque wrench.

Most of the previous engine clatter could not be detected on my 100 km trip this morning.

Have to try some Schnorr steel bite washers on the head mounts which may stop them coming loose
