    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Husky dealers sending back moss tools?

So just swing by corporate to get MOSS work? I know that HYR in Redlands sent their MOSS back a week before I brought my Terra in for break-in service.

Just thinking that big money for dealers to have this was a mistake. Investing the profits on at least the first half dozen bikes (ok, that's a guess) seems like a leap of faith for dealers. They already know they'll have to inventory parts and supplies that may be different, as well as riding accessories that suit this style of riding, ADV v. Dirt or DS. just a lot to lay on them, I think. If they're trying to thin the herd (of dealers) then it would make sense. I would have sent the tool free with say an initial order of 3 or 4 units or made it free after a dealer had sold a given number of units. Share the effort.
 
It's not looking good...

Just got back from the BMW dealer. BMW did not sell the moss tool with the husqvarna deal. My BMW dealer was getting ready to sell Huskies, but has since abandoned the idea. I also had them hook my bike up to their tool, and they could not access my bike, No VIN number.

Service manager is going to research to see what can be done, but thinks that since they are not a Husky dealer, I should not get my hopes up.

This is an issue all Terra/Strada/Nuda owners need to be proactive on, or your bike may soon be a lawn ornament should something fail, and all Moss get recalled by BMW. You say it can't happen, don't be so sure.

The guy at Rexxer is willing to spend some time on our issue, he would like to look at a bike, they are in the Richmond area. I think he may even be able to program a hack to disable the rfid, something the moss cannot do.

There is one Terra owner already dead in the water, getting no resolution for his bike, do you feel Lucky'
 
I havent actually been at the controls, but it is my understanding that bypassing the VIN is SOP for everyone, even the Husqvarna dealers.
 
Dont know about keys, I thought we were talking about ECUs. For instance Bill's Motorcycles Plus in Salem has used their MOSS on a BMW GS650 and they are not a BMW dealer. Ive heard others report bypassing the VIN to reflash TRs. There is a way to get past the VIN barrier, but I dont know how it is done. Husky dealers working with Corona seem to be able to handle this. Not sure how a BMW dealer would do it. It is unfortunate that so many dealers gave up on the 650/MOSS; in the Northwest they are still selling strong, and its one model that the factory has continued to ship.
 
It would be nice to get some solid answers. As with anything corporate, some workers are willing to help the customer, others only play by the book, and not willing to go outside the box. If the BMW dealer started to hack or bypass and break BMW protocol, they may think they might get in trouble with BMW.

I know that BMW dealer (well one just like that). I dont shop there anymore.

I think you're scaremongering. I don't think a tech in a BMW dealership is a credible source for information about the contractual details of the sale of Husqvarna to Perrier. As other people have already found out, although BMW and Husqvarna dealers both have MOSS, presumably BMW did not load up the Husqvarna model info in the MOSS of BMW dealers who are not Husqvarna dealers, and Husqvarna dealers who are not BMW dealers don't have the BMW fleet info loaded into their machines.

As for MOSS being recalled by BMW, as far as I know the Husqvarna dealers had to buy the MOSS systems from BMW at a considerable expense - around $8000 US/AU per unit I believe. If BMW were to pull the plug and disconnect every Husqvarna dealer in the world with a MOSS unit, I dare say they would face a huge legal action.

I have no doubt that continued access to MOSS for existing models or at least some alternative was part of the sale of Husqvarna and that your predictions of woe are quite fanciful. I don't think the sky is falling down. Carry on and enjoy riding your bike.
 
Staying within protocols makes sense if your dealing with street legal bikes. If they are powered up for off road then not so much.

It is not fanciful. My husky dealer has told me they are sending the moss back. That is what I know. I know that as of just the other day, BMW moss tool did not have my VIN number and cannot (will not) access my Terra with their Moss. Whether they will get cooperation from BMW to allow the Husky VIN into the BMW Moss is up for question for now. If HUSKY dealers do not see fit to keep an maintain the moss unit for two bikes or three bikes, you or I may not be able to make them keep it to service the few Terra/Strada/Nuda in their area.

This is a reality, you should be concerned.

Do the math, $8K machine to make 400 a year, or send it back (within a timeframe) for credit. Do you feel lucky?
 
THERE IS A SIMPLE OVER RIDE TO GET EVERY VIN TO READ IT EVEN PROMPTS YOU AND ASK IF YOU WISH TO OVERIDE IT AND THEN IT READS IT.I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT RECOGNIZE A SINGLE BIKE AND FOLOWED THE PROMPTS TO CONTIUE ?WORKS EVERY TIME.

How do you program a key if the VIN is not recognized?

For clarification I did not say that or imply that. I said my dealer is sending theirs back. If mine is, and I may try to change their minds, other small dealers may ship their back if they have one.

I don't like mentioning this next thing. It may take a class action lawsuit later down the road, are you prepared or willing? Or would it be better to take the steps now to prevent it? Personally, I like the idea of an alternative, even if it is $600 per bike. Until then, you need to be in contact with your dealers to give them input and support.

I pay the extra money for them to service my bike. I am fully capable of doing it myself. But you need to support the dealer, or they go belly up, and that has happened. Obama will not come in and rescue them.

I think Bert's Megamall in Covina has one. I know they reflashed/updated my Strada's ECU before I took delivery a few weeks ago.

BTW, my bike seems to run just fine. No issues with the engine cutting out.
