  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Husky kit exhaust

I have a 2009 TE510 and I was looking at getting either a different exhaust system or just a replacement muffler. I am looking for one that is lighter weight, spark arrested and it needs to be at the most 96db, for racing requirements. I was wondering if anybody has tried the Husky special parts muffler or system. It seems like it is a bit on the high side, but if it offers big gains and weight savings then it might be worth it. Does anybody know what the replacement ECU will do for it? I also saw that FMF makes a slip on setup. What are you guys running?
Thanks,
Dustin

If you can find Special Catalog, look there...or ask your local dealer....
Arrow, Leovince, FMF, Devil, Akrapovic theres some exhaust factor
If you want juse different ECU I recommend, POwercommander V+AutoTune box

I think Dan Bartel did a review of the FMF exhaust on his 10TE510 in the sticky "living with a 510" or something like that...

I don't know of a system that meets all your requiremements at once. But I haven't overly studied on the issue.

Personally: 09TE450- stock Arrow in PU mode (no cat). I modified an insert to achieve 95DB when testing Per SAE J1287 (which is the standard in AMA D16 for Offroad and Dualsport). With the standard Spark Arrestor- I was testing at 99db. So although I have no weight savings- I have the rest... without costing too much. Basically I added stainless tube (about 4" from memory?) inward the same diameter as the OD of the inserts tube where exhaust flows- welded, then welded the spark arrestor screen in place. I tested with a sound meter- and came up with this length till I achieved what I wanted. In essence- there is no real added restriction- accept at lower Rpms. I pass the test at 95db- but my bike's exhaust gets louder with RPMs (normal- but I mean acts like its still as open as it was prior to mod)- So when I am at Mid throttle it seems to sound and breath the same... so its still as loud mid throttle- I think to a bike that fails the test. That's the best of both worlds flow and quiet- cause when you want to be quiet (like in a "quiet zone") - just don't rev it. I think FMF and simular companies try to achieve their 94/96 db exhausts by targeting Db at the test rpms. Which is what I luckily achieved as well.

You can also just by the Arrow Db Killer (euro version) but that will be quieter(good) but more restrictive than a modded insert. Or you could try a DBDawg insert.

If I crushed my exhaust- I would probably look for a FMF repacement- simply due to Cost.

Sorry for no other info on aftermarket pipes- hope you find what you are looking for.

Any other experiences here? I was going to post the same thread but seems I am looking for the exact same setup as the OP, just for an SM510. I am thinking about going with an FMF single pipe as well or cutting down my stock pipes and removing the cats which will hopefully shed about 5 or 6lbs from each side. I want to stay quiet as well.

Anyone know if FMF is making those new carbon fiber units that will fit a TE/SM 510?

I've got the FMF Q on my '09 450. The power is roughly the same IMO but the bike is quieter which is what I was after, the stock Arrow with the cat removed was too loud for me. I doubt you'll find big gains and quieter.

Thanks Sharpie. How about the sound difference between the totally stock dual setup (with cats still in the pipe) to the stock dual setup just with the cats removed? Would there be a big change in sound? From what I've read the stock dual cats are actually pretty efficient and don't affect performance much. I would really be de-catting just to lose weight and get a little more refined sound, but don't want to add much in the way of sound volume / dbs.
