  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Husqvarna 510TX 1983 Resto

Hi it definatley a delorto carb whether it a quirter or not i dont know. Is your a 6 speed if so how do you get on with it at a motocross race? cheers Barry
Barry, as a matter of interest, is your 83TX fitted with the 36mm squirter Dellorto? Good luck with the resto, theyre special machines. I do believe two from SA found their way to NZ the best part of 20yrs ago.
Have a couple of these Husky 4Ts, and the Honda XR was a little red lazy donkey in comparison.

@Barry. I run 6spd with TE clutch set, i.e. 30t crank gear & 79t clutch-gear. 14/53 sprockets which make for a comfortable bike that doubles as enduro and trails machine. For MX starts it pulls off in 2nd, 3rd is close and i seldom see more than 4th, sometimes 5th on really long straights. With this setup 3rd gearset takes a constant beating and the dogs are vulnerable.

The 4spd boxes ive thusfar only used on 500 2T machines purely for MX and goes with same clutch crank setup and sprockets. Very strong gearbox, big dogs, longer gear spacing with more clutching outta turns, and will work really well and very reliable on 4T. if 4th is too low you simply put 15t front sprocket.

The TX with accellerator pump 36 Dellorto was only in early 83 and very rare.

So i think ive found myself a 500cr 4spd transmission complete anyone know if thats the same gear set used in the TC? cheers

Barry I have several 6speed te gearboxes. if you run into trouble let me know what you need and I can have a look for you. Its seems there are always one or two gears losing their hardening per box

Hi thanks very much its good to know someone relatively close has a 4T husky im not sure if theres any others in NZ? ive actually just bought a 4 speed from a 2 stroke 500 as id sooner of had a TC rather than a TX im told it should work well & is a lot tougher. how do you get on with yours? cheers Barry

Mine has 3 seasons on it now of solid vmx use. I replaced a couple of gears when i rebuilt the motor as the hardening had gone. I replace the oil every 2nd ride and once the motor settled down there is very little material on the magnet sump plug so I assume all is good
Much like husky ham i have 14 / 53 final gearing -but I can pull 3rd gear starts and if not a holeshot definately in the first 3 against all comers two or 4 stroke. 3/4th used mainly and 5th on a particular open track, dont think ive ever used 6th gear. im 82kg, but my buddy whos above the 100kg mark prefers 2nd gear on his 14/52 geared bike, but it has a cam in it too with less off the bottom than mine with more up top.
We have 3 x 510s in our vmx club here in qld, all good sarters and runners...one is a tx 4spd , no advantage really, but probably stronger gears

Thanks very much for all the info its going to help lots when i get around to putting it all back together. At the moment im waiting on another gear to come from the states when i received the 4spd gear set i noticed the hardening coming off of gear 374 anyway the guy i bought it from is kindly replacing the gear, hopefully ill have it this time next week & i can start the bottom end assembly then when i know alls ok send the crank cases away for vapour blasting & painting/ powder coating? not sure which yet any suggestions? thanks again barry

Ok some time has past i know but ive finally saved some money to further my 4T project the, the complete engine has been bead blasted next i will get the crank cases powder coated i hopefully have everything to assemble the engine back together then, i am installing a 4spd gear box so hopefully soon ill be able to post some pictures up... Question does anyone know why on the magneto cover there is 2 hose fittings almost like a breather hose?? why would the mag want to breath or a supply of anything?? Also does anyone know of an after market exhaust system 2into1 preferably?cheers

Barry, Yes the 510 before 1985 had problems with engine heat & marginal ignitions, so they added those breather hoses to the right side covers. Husky John

The twin exhaust was a lot lighter than a two into 1 which is why Husky ran with it. two small mufflers versus a bigger more complex one (from the factory to meet US noise reqs) was their take on it.
I love the sound of that twin exhaust (TT, XR and KLX / DR riders hated it as that's:lol: all they heard).

Wouldnt care to part with 787 by any chance;) , ol mate would kill for a model of that year....

@Surprize: #787 was torn down and became a donor. The frame was strengthened in critical areas, enamelled, and the yellow seated machine behind it (formerly 2e, the frame of which i broke) was built into it and the rest of the parts retained for other 4T projects.

Seen plenty 2 into 1 pipes on these 4Ts, though it makes for a narrower ride i feel it plunders the original riding character and appearance of a very unique machine. Twin megaphones perform, weigh VERY little, and simply sound better than anything else before or since. Psychologically rips the guts out of your riding/racing mates.

A mate fitted a single pipe (2 into1) set up on his 510,(to make it narrower and provide clearance for clicker ohlins) jetting was hard to sort out, and it was down on power in the all important first corner drag race.. he has gone back to twin pipes.. I don't like the idea of that hot pipe going under the carb either.
Sure the bike is a bit wider, but it looks cool!
