• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

hey folks,

acquiring a 610 in the next few weeks. it has a Hyde skid plate installed but i'm considering replacing it with an Uptite... i'm willing to spend money where it's warranted but i don't want to waste money, you know? i'm curious about opinions on the Hyde plate. in particular, i'm a little concerned about how it doesn't come up as high around the sides as i'd expect.

i had an Uptite on my 310 and loved it - it did eventually start to crack on one of the seams, but probably could have been repaired, and it definitely stood up to some abuse. it wasn't light, but i'm not racing and i don't care that much. it definitely wrapped way around to provide a lot of protection for the cases.

i'm riding in the northeast and expect to find a lot of rocks (or they'll find me, same thing)

thanks in advance on any thoughts comparing these two brands, and particularly the side coverage of the Hyde.

*edit:

"You're seriously overthinking this, mate, just ride what you have" is also a valid answer which i should have included on the poll =D

I've got the Hyde on my SMS and i like it.
It's lighter and quieter than an aluminum plate, and it tends to slip and slide over things instead of bite like an aluminum plate can.
I can tell you it will keep the cases safe in a drop

Uptite = metal, noisy, clearly very rugged
Hyde = plastic, way less noisy, still quite rugged, lighter

IMO, the Uptite is only better if you really slam that bash plate HARD. In an extreme case, it's going to be more rugged than the Hyde.
I never hit my bash plates super hard. When I see obstacles like that, I slow down. I have a metal bash plate on my F800GS and on gravel roads... it's tink, tink, tink like no tomorrow.

If it ain't broke don't fix it, you wanted to not waste money if the bike comes with a Hyde skidder then leave it on till it's dead then buy uptite.

I think the walmart version would fold in half if the front tire kicked up a pebble at highway speeds...
