    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I have a HUGE oil leak, and it's a mystery to me...

Here's the scenario:

In Washington state, at sea level and I'm moving the bike to SoCal. I have it in a large cargo trailer, along with 5 tons of other stuff. I left on Friday afternoon and got to SoCal Saturday night. I checked the load, including the bike about every 150 to 175 miles at every fuel stop. At the last fuel stop at Grapevine CA, there was a large amount of oil under the Husky. I wasn't able to take a good look, and so I closed the trailer back up and kept on my way, with the next stop being my shop at Rancho Cucamonga CA. I unloaded the bike and took a better look and found that the oil sump (frame reservoir) was empty. We found that the airbox had a lot of oil in it, and that an electrical connection to the bottom of the airbox on the left side of the bike (maybe the air temp sensor connector) had a lot of oil coming out of it as well.

We put between 26 and 34 ounces of oil back in, and started the bike with the oil fill plug off just to check for oil circulation and it seems okay.

Anyone have any ideas what may be going on? Insight and opinions would be a great benefit right now.In the last 3 months, I've moved all of my bike (9) from WA to CA and have not had an issue with any, except for the Terra.

Also, does anyone know of servicing dealers for the TR's in So Cal?

i had a leak from my terra oil tank as well i found mine to be where the oil pick up is on the left side. there will be a hose that comes off the keft side. there is a plastic nut with a pick up tube off that hose sticking into the oil tank,mine was loose and caused it to leak oil pretty good.

I live in Claremont about 10 miles West of Cucamonga and those are the only two options I can find. Mountain Motorsports in Ontario sells them but they do not have a MOSS tool and won't service the TR's.
 
Okay DBRider, great information. I see 2 oil lines off the left side, one higher than the other. Did the issue you had involve the lower line (the one that has the drain fitting in the rubber hose, or was it the hose on the top left side? Looks to me from the workshop manual that it may be the lower line, but I'm not at my shop to look, and I think this is covered with plastics, anyway.

Craig, thanks for the input. I know that Malcolm Smith in San Berdu sells these, I wonder if they service... It's a bit further out there, but may may be an option. I'll have to call Tuesday morning.

i had to remove plastics and coolant resivior to get to it, it was where the line (upper section befor drain) where it goes into the sump (frame resivior) the line (rubber hose) attaches to this fitting that screwed into the sump. mine had vibrated loose and oil was running down the frame and oil line covering the left side radiator and sensor that is on that side. this line that goes into the frame is attached to a (plastic) nut that has a screen for a filtering the oil from sump. clean screen mine had plastic on it i assume from the plastic dipstick.
 
Makes perfect sense now... Will start taking things apart tonight.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I was a little worried, to say the least! Sounds like an easy enough fix, though. I'll post up the end result.

If memory serves I think I remember hearing that Malcolm Smith has or is going to return their MOSS tool.
 
Just wanted to give an update.

I disassembled the body work and detached the coolant reservoir. Looked all over for the source of the oil leak. Could not find the source other than oil dripping from the intake air temperature sensor. This was alarming to me, as there is only one connection from engine to air box (other than intake). There is a small tube from the right side of the engine side cover to the air box and I though that perhaps cylinder blow-by was blowing oil into the air-box. I checked for blow-by and there was none as far as I could tell. All that was happening was the pulsing of air in /out from the piston moving up and down.

I went through the oil level checking process and fought the dipstick so much that I cut the stick halfway between high and low, threads in fine now and can still check oil making sure it's (minimally) at the halfway mark. Put the TR back together and over the next two days ran it ~250 miles, checking oil often. No drop in the level, no more oil out of the air box. Every thing seems good... (I hope).

In this process, I learned 2 things. 1, when I bought the bike, the dealer told me the "service" manual was on the flash drive. It is not. 2, the manual posted on this forum seems to be missing quite a few sections. I wanted to take the air box out and split it to give it a good cleaning, removing all of the residual oil. If there are any sections about removing it in the downloadable manual on this site, they're absent, along with a lot of other useful data. I'm not complaining about this, I'm thankful that what was there was there. It was incredibly useful. I just wonder if the OP of the manual knows there are sections missing, or if any one else has found this issue, or has the missing sections and would mind sharing?

I really am loving this bike, even with this unsolved mystery oil thing. I'm looking for a longer haul ride and have wanted, for some time now, to ride down to Oaxaca, MX but am reluctant in case I have another mystery problem. I'd hate to have to walk away from it in Mexico! But I like the motor so much I may have to find a decent F650 or G650. For some reason, I don't think I'd get quite as beat up as I do on the KLR!

Craig, thanks for your help on this. I'm in Washington now, but should be back to Rancho by Thanksgiving weekend. If you'd like to go for a ride sometime, let me know, I'm almost always game!

All in all, I actually think I lost almost 1 litre of oil, and I didn't mention this previously either, the bottom inch or so of my air filter was saturates with oil.

I've seen some strange stuff wrenching on bike over the years, but this really has me stumped!
 
Very strange. Note that there is also a small breather hose from the very middle and top of the bright red valve cover that goes to somewhere (I forgot where, maybe the airbox, or I think the frame sump).

Removing the airbox requires tilting the rear subframe. See the valve adjustment thread and basically you have to do all that.
