• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

kn 151 oil filter

The bypass is if the filter is clogged and build too much vacuum. As often as you are supposed to change it doubt we even come close to the bypass opening but noticed the kn filter spring has a lot less tension then the factory personally I was worried would open prematurely and let dirty oil through

Yeah that's what I did, then it occurred to me, Will the bypass valve do its job when it's blocked by a tight fitting cover?
Its tight yes but there is still pleanty of space for the oil to get around. The only tight part is the three metal fingers on the cap.

The top base plate of the k&n 151 filter is a slightly larger diameter than the 3 centering tabs on the oil filter cover plate. Rather than force the filter between the tabs and risk damaging the filter, I used a Dremel tool and filed the tabs back slightly. It was either that or put the old filter back in and there are no filters where I live, had to wait a week to get the K&N filter as it was. Other than that the filters are identical, and all the tabs do is prevent the filter from being cocked one side to the other, but there is no risk of the filter coming unseated as the post is a few centimeters long. To be safe it is always better to go with the OEM part, but K&N are usually fairly high quality, and to be fair, the filter was intended for a F650GS, not for a Husky. Curious to know if the Beemer oil cover plate dimensions are the same or if the made-in-china Husky 650 engine is just a little off...

I should have taken a pic at my last oil change. There are two different batches of the KN-151 out there. One fits great (the older one) the newer ones are a very tight fit. I still got the tighter/new version on by pushing it into the cover first and then seating it. Much easier, and less nerve-wracking than trying to muscle the cover over the already installed filter.

This makes sense. I changed my oil yesterday and noticed that my old KN-151 was a different color than the new one I was installing. I thought it was weird, but didn't think too much of it until now. If only I had taken pictures of the two.

I wonder if the ones from the web are knock-offs? The one I bought from the local repair shop fit perfect.

I bought mine from amazon. It was the regular red color and no problems with fitment. K & N is local to me so I will call them tomorrow and ask about the fitment and color.

I want to confirm the filters with the fitment problem are yellow in color?

The newest one I got was a yellowish white color, the one I just pulled out was red. I get all mine from my local Yamaha/Harley dealer, and they keep them in stock on my request. I did notice that the new one fit a little tighter, but it still fit without a fight.

I called K&N today. The rep told me the filters are red and there has been no changes to the filters. He stated they have seen old stock air filters turn an orange color.

Maybe that is what is happening, people are getting new old stock from certain places?

I ordered a new filter straight from K & N. I received the filter and the filter is stamped made in China. I don't remember the previous being stamped made in China. I am done drinking the K&N coolaid. I am jumping ship and going with a stainless next filter change.

K & P make stainless steel replacement filters, for the BMW version, same part number I get mine from Jays Automotive in Sydney
Better filtration, improved flow & cleanable - lasts forever

Ordered a K&N from autozone, picked it up in store. It was red in color, stamped Made in China, and had no fitment issues. About $10 btw.
