• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

kneebraces, whats the lowdown on them?

been looking recently, man they are proud of theese things. obviously asterisk are one of the top of the line brands but can i get away witha $200-$300 set as opposed to a $600+ set?? seen some evs braces that are about half the price of the asterisks..

thanks

This is one of those deals where you get what you pay for. I've been down this road and ended up spending 100's on cheap braces only to learn that I should have bought the Asterisk's to begin with. Cody and I both have Asterisk braces going on 3 years now. They've performed and held up well. I don't ride without them. They are well worth the cost IMO.

Keep an eye on your local classifieds, i bought a set of refurbished asterisk, like new with lots of extra parts for $150. First time i wore them i took em off after two laps. Tried em again a few practices later and loved em. You dont notice the asterisk if they fit right. THis is for MX, not sure how they would be on the trails. My set was stolen and i miss them, but cant bring myself to replace them at a higher cost. FWIW i have no knee issues, just wanted the protection.

I tried Asterisk braces and couldn't get them adjusted to where I could wear them without pain. They would dig into my legs below the knee something fierce. I ended up selling them for about half of what I paid. :(

I use EVS braces, but have to admit that Im not a big fan of knee braces in general so I often ride without them. In high speed terrain or races I wear them and find that I forget they are there quickly. Whether or not they are doing anything I dont really know... maybe someday I will land on a rock with my knee and be glad they are there.

Been told if your older, these can extend your career, (whoops I mean hobby!) Iv'e heard older guys (like myself 40 plus) say they would not ride without them. Not sure of brand choice. I have been thinking about them for awhile

lookin at the evsRS8 (if i get soem this riding season) probably not as good as the asterisk but not as pricey either.. what exactly do theese do for you anyway? (i mean are they more protection from like rocks and hard dirt clods if ya fall or are they there to help your knee from being ripped apart like a hotwing during football on sunday afternoon orr both) i ride with soft evs knee supports now and it seems to help some but i really dont know.

I have had knee surgery along with 5 other surgeries including pinning a broken femur. I have a DonJoy knee brace that I'm supposed to wear when I'm doing anything that taxes my knee. This knee brace is the real deal, like you see the pro football players wear, but unfortunately it won't fit under my riding pants and has no armor to protest against rocks and trees. I have coached and played tennis for the past 12 years and discovered that the number one thing you can do to protect your knee is get fit strengthening your quads and hamstrings and work on being flexible. I only needed my brace for support when my legs were not in shape. As of now I do wear the $18 dollar shin/knee guards in case I have a get off in some rocks. If I could attach armor to my ($1,500.00 for one knee) brace I think it would lessen the odds of injury but the bulk of it would not be practical while riding. I have looked at some of the high end braces and some look to have value but fit is everything and mail ordering a brace is a gamble I have not yet decided to take.

I would be the perfect candidate for testing a brace, I'm old, beat up and crash a lot so if any makers of really good braces are out there listening PM me. ;)

i sprained my knee early spring first time ever, and have done it now 4 or 5 times to the right knee(had mri and paid to be told nothing is wrong pffft) and 2 or 3 light sprains to my left knee since... i guess mid thirties is officially when you start goin to hell huh lol i narrowed it down to havind my foot rotated when coming up from a knee. basiclly i wear a soft sports knee brace now when working and the soft evs braces when riding. oddly enough none of my knee probs have come from riding but all started shortly after i started riding again in spring:excuseme:

The older you get the more work it takes to stay in shape.

I like the looks of the pod braces and they can be covered by insurance with a doctors prescription but as I said before fit is everything. If you're lucky enough to buy off the shelf and get a good fit then they would probably work well.

You need a knee brace that will protect the side of the knee from damage from a direct hit. I use CTI braces but my insurance paid for it & the rep gave me one for the other knee. [very fortunate] As already posted,it is really important to get them fitted. I don't really like them & they blow out the knees of my pants yearly but I have much more confidence & ride better when I have them on. Get hurt once & you will know what i mean. Don't wear goggles [get a stick in the eye & you will] SAME SITUATION! Ride long & hard enough & you will bust your knee. Be ready for it.

If you get a Set of Braces, Make sure you have over the Boot pants. I wear Recon pants & they have way more space for your braces. I found that tuck in pants were to restrictive.

+1 for strength training. That'll help keep you injury free, along with the myriad of other benefits that go along with it.

A good set of well-fitting braces (Asterisk, POD, customs) will help prevent hyper-extension of the joint side to side, twisting, and oposite normal extension. The primary job of a good brace is to prevent hyper-extension... not to protect from impacting things. I would avoid the RS-8's. A friend went through 2 pair in several months. Each pair broke at the hinge mechanism. Plastic hinge lever snapped in two. Thankfully, Cycle Gear exchanged the first set, and refunded his money when the second set failed.

Tried elbow braces the first time I went to moab utah. what I noticed was a definate increase in arm pump. Honestly for a true RACE if it was life or death or do or die, your basic gear is what would be best in my opinion. this is if it was not a hobby and meant everything to a guy. This year I screwed up and at the 1st race got to the start line, and oh SH-- realized I had forgotton my chest protector/camelback!!! and they screwed up, so nothing for 3/4 of the race!! Felt naked at first, then, wow!!! Felt nice with NO chest protector!! Also, my theory on hydrating. Do not drink any beer (kills ME!!!0 3 days before a race, and drink massive amounts of water, and powerade. Also have spagetti the night before. Anyways the point is anytime during the race when you try to hydrate, you lose time!! You have to take your left hand off the bar, etc.............................. I do not drink until a reset**************************************** i think like these other guys say, fit is everything!!! If you are not comfortable it will not work!!! Good luck, and let me know how it works for ya!!!
