• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

L/C 430 right crank bearing

Things are moving fast now. The carb, airbox, & right rear number plate were all installed. The drive chain, radiators & hoses were also installed. I am waiting on the clutch cover because when replacing the water pump bearings & seal the snap ring for the impeller broke. I need to get one of them so I can close that side of the motor up & install the shifter. carb, airbox, radiators.JPGchain, brake pedal installed.JPGright side coming together.JPG

You might want a bigger front sprocket, no? I like a 15 on my 250 and 400. Love all the details and tips your giving others here in this build..

I have 20 or so NOS snap rings, if no luck i can mail some to you.

Thanks 86 400 xc, I got some clips today. I reassembled the water pump on the clutch cover & installed it. I then installed the shifter, kicker, & secured the coolant hoses. Then I slipped the pipe in place. clutch cover, kicker, shifter, waterpump.JPGright.JPG

The pipe is always a challenge but it went right on without any drama. Usually it takes a little adjusting on the mounts but it lined up pretty easily. Years ago I cut a brass shim to wrap around the entrance end of the pipe to snug it in the flange mount. I even wire tied a wrap of tie wire around the pipe right were it comes out of the flange to hold the shim in place. It makes for a pretty snug fit (relatively). I have spent considerable effort here to replace the hardware through this whole reassembly process & where I couldn't, I cleaned & detailed what I could. But, I must admit, I did nothing to the pipe except put it on because I had repainted it not long before my transmission problems (2.5 years ago). Oh, it's an uptite pipe from back in the late 80's. It's running through an answer SA Pro silencer from the same era. This pipe was on a 1987 CR430 I had in the late 80's & has been run on this bike since around '92.

Paint turned out OK. I used duplicolor engine enamel, Ford semigloss black. I used a hot air gun to bake the paint in a make-shift cardboard oven. View attachment 27912View attachment 27913View attachment 27914
You asked for something to be done in this thread, starting with this post.

But I am unclear as to what you want done? Could you let me know what you want done like this: move posts #__ #___ #___ into a new thread called ""1988 430 reassembly"" in vintage restoration projects?

Well, I originally thought I was going to post just a couple of pics of the engine reassembly. It has become much more than that. The thread wasn't getting much interest or interaction with other members & I thought it might be due to the fact that is a continuation of a crank bearing thread. I thought I might be doing the forum an injustice by not starting a new thread on the reassembly process. I just wanted to offer it up to be moved if you thought it (the reassembly process)was in the wrong place in the forums. At this point, I am almost done so as far as I am concerned it can stay here & it is what it is. If it were to be moved I would move posts #22 thru #31 & from #34 to present (posts #32 & #33 are on the original bearing topic) As far as where it should go I am not sure. It is not a complete motorcycle restoration per say. But it is the reassembly of an '88 430. You are the boss so I'll leave it up to you. I'm fine with it either way & sorry for this long winded explanation of what I was thinking.

Today I attached t he clutch cable, Throttle cable, & the tank & plastics. Note the brass shim I made to snug the clutch cable in its mount on the clutch cover. That shim takes a lot of play out of the cable for a much more positive feel. I still have to check timing then all I have to do is fill up the fluids. I love this bike. cable shim.JPGclutch cable shim.JPGleft.JPGright.JPG

"I love this Bike"... until the throttle sticks open:eek:

looking good! Enjoy the shakedown cruise;)

Yeah, it would be just like when the clutch sends you forward the first time it's jammed in gear.....you just get used to it. The plan is to start it & run it a bit today. I'm guessing I'll have some rejetting to do after the porting that was done.

Very nice build. Are you happy with the Ford semigloss black? It looks good in the pics but they never look the same as in person. Did you use a primer?

I did not use a primer, I used lite sanding with fine paper & green scotch pads. I then washed the parts in the kitchen sink with lots of grease cutting dish soap & blew them dry with my compressor. The paint is perfect. looks better than gloss & better than flat. It matches the original very well.

Well, so far so good. I am playing with the jetting just as I thought I was going to have to. I did manage to lose or misplace the rubber grommet for the mag. wire coming out of the engine. If anyone has one for cheep or wants to donate one to this fine example of a L/C husky I'd be interested. I guess it'll have to stay dry until I get something or I'll "redneck engineering" some sort of silicone solution.

One of the service bulletin's in the vintage tech. section listed it as one of the modifications along with raising the exhaust port in the cyl. to CR specs for more HP. Look up the tech section & scroll through the stuff for these years bikes. There are diagrams of the porting.

Very cool. Thanks.
Looks like my next rebuild is a 430. I have a 430 Auto engine sitting around that could use a rebuild.
