• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Looking at a 610 SM --Advice please

Looking at a second hand 2006 610 SM here in SA. I have a 09-610 te and a 07 -450te

Took the 610te for a ride today--the bike looks in pretty good nick with 15000km on the clock.
Needs a front -back sprocket and a new chain.

Motor--sounds like the cam chain --bit too noisy for me.

The rest seems Ok on the surface --Does not pull as strong as my 09TE with the O2 converson on it..

Anything i should look out for --planning to spend some bucks on it and do some graphics and use it as a everyday run about --Your input would greatly be appreciated as i have never owned a SM before--

Look at the wheels for cracks, check cylinder & head for coolant/oil sweating, fuel petcock leaking. Those seem to be the biggest problems on the 06 I can think of off hand.
 
Isn't that like 9,320 miles? If it was taken care of, I would think it should have more miles left before a rebuild. :D

The first one i looked at with low kms on had seized steering head bearings and i did notice that the fuel petcock was leaking.

The other one that looks good-has some oil sweat on the cylinder side - i could not see where it was coming from--

Will go and have another look --thanks so far for the input--

Yes, the internal gearing is all the same. In fact it is the same engine. :)
 
The cam chain is probably due for replacement, you might use that as a bargaining chip. Same thing with the drive chain if it is clapped out. Actually, some of the supermoto guys replace the stock Regina chain out of fear of it popping (?) but I am still running mine.

Other things to check on the '06 sm610 are leaky valve cap gaskets, pinched hoses and wires, stuck/spun airbox fasteners, and excess epoxy (for the magnets/flywheel bond) tends to flake off.. small particles may be sitting in the left bag filter, and larger chunks left of crankcase.

Also check the gas line that passes from the left petcock to the right. For some reason mine gets very hot and actually blistered the line. I caught it in time and insulated it from the heat.

Once it is sorted out it's a damn fine bike to whiz around town, that's for sure. :thumbsup:

Thank's for the informative reply-- am looking at something to use in town---got a quote on the chain and guides as well as new chain and sprockets to use as a bargaining tool--ouch expensive--guess if one is going to that expense i may as well do the rings etc--will hear if he will be interested to take a drop in price------

You don't need to do the rings. the camchain needs replacement if it's making noise.

The 610 has a very small margin for camchain stretch.

I need to replace mine with 9kms on the bike.

Check the wheels for cracks!! This is the first I've heard about that one! Whereabouts are they prone to cracking and how common is it.....

Great question. I cannot recall cracked wheel issues being mentioned, nor the other things being described.

I could have missed it, especially because I don't own a 610, but I do read these types of forums quite a lot.
 
Not a whole lot of issues, but its weighed on my mind. Since I ride my HVA on the street & at speed, I always check tires/tire pressure, chain, condition of the brakes & rotors. Most of these problems were probably from want to be "hooligans" bumping curbs, stairs, parking lot curbs, ect.... But if I was looking at a used Motard I would look at the wheels for any issues.

I ride my SM610 in rocks and dirt and off curbs and stuff all the time (does that make me a wannabe hooligan?:excuseme:) and I've had no issues with wheels cracking. It's an `07, but I'm guessing the wheels are the same.

I think they must have had some bad wheels in the first batch of 05 & 06. Most of the post are semi-old, but Coffee said he had not remembered anything about cracked wheels. I've been riding a long time know & I've never seen a set of wheels crack like the ones listed above. As I stated before, I'd always look at the wheels of a used bike when making a purchase. Not pointing a finger at anyone, I am a street hooligan, or a least I like to think so.:D

Oh & WoodsChick, there's no want to be's with you. I've seen some of your photos & stuff. You're certifiable HOOLIGAN. Wear it with pride!!!:cool:

They crack at the weld seam. mine cracked.
