Mossed, Spoofed and Semi-Terra-fied

While it may appear that I'm bringing coal to Newcastle / snow to the Eskimos, I thought I'd add a short post with a couple of photos reporting on a couple of common mods.

1. The death-stall. Like many or most Strada/Terra owners, mine had the rough idle and propensity to stall when it sensed that I would be most at most risk of being run-over by a truck.

I took it back to my local dealer (Byrners Motorcycles in Seaford, Victoria). First time they couldn't get the Moss program working at all. Second time the Moss operation worked and the improvement was considerable but still too lean and still a little prone to stalling.

I just installed the Accelerator Module from Sol2 Solutions (no affiliation) - works as well as other reports of the other spoofers would indicate. Much stronger idle, very smooth acceleration and no jerkiness. It's also much cheaper than Booster Plug - so one to keep in mind if you're looking at Spoofers.

2. While I like the wheels on the Strada, I also like the high fender of the Terra. The same dealer happened to have the high fender and fork guards in stock - if you're in Oz, they'll cost you $145! That includes $33 for each fork guard! I've seen elsewhere on this site that they're only about $7 each in the US.

I've included a couple of photos in case anyone else is considering. I know, I know, it's been done many times by others on this site - I just couldn't recall seeing the mod with the Strada wheels left on.

Finally, if there's one criticism I would make of the engine - or at least it's tuning - is that it has much less low-end torque than I would like. Below 3k RPM is pretty weak. My most recent benchmark comparison would be the KTM 640 supermotard. There seems to be a variety of opinions/experiences on this topic with some reporting excellent pull from off idle. The pod-mod is next for me, so hopefully that will make a small improvement. Anyway, just a reflection - any comments welcome.View attachment 43923

It seems the Husqvarna wanted more top-end power. The first thing I noticed about my 08 SMR510 is how much power it has up top for a big single. . The power is not linear and comes on strong around 5500rpm. The TR650 is similar in that respect

I have the accelerator module myself, but be aware that the ECU will eventually adapt to it, same as with any IAT spoofer out there, but I think the performance is still marginally better than stock even after the adaptation.

I've never had the pleasure to ride a KTM (or a Husqvarna before the TR650), but all the other thumpers I've tried (DR650, KLR, Dominator) were much slower at picking up speed at low RPMs, at least as far as I can remember.

The difference is the advanced FI ECU. The Magnetti/Marrelli adapts very quickly.

Is there a way of re-setting the ECU periodically to erase the adaptations to the spoofer?

Re the low end torque, I just completed the pod mod yesterday and rode it to work today - wow, what a difference that made. It seems to me (I'm always wary of unverifiable, seat of the pants-type impressions) that it has significantly improved low end torque. At this stage I have left the front OEM air filter door off which also possibly improves airflow.

Yes, you can reset.

1. Turn on the bike. Use the S button to see the UG displayed (used fuel) and note the reading
2. Disconnect the battery for at least one hour
3. Reconnect the battery
4. Turn on the key
5. Note the new UG value displayed and it should read "0" now
6. Turn the throttle to WOT and back to nill three times
7. Start the bike WITHOUT touching the throttle (no gas idle only)
8. Let the bike idle for 10 minutes or until your radiator fan is running
9. Go ride

I got about 1K miles on my bike after the AIT spoofer was installed then it reverted to the stock map.

Go to "Part A">"Air Box/Air filter Modifications" Pay close attention the threads or you will have problems. More than one top end has been shelled as a result of dirt infiltration.

As for the OEM filter door, I assumed there would be no issue with it being removed having already done the Pod-Mod? Perhaps I'm missing something.

Just make sure you have drainage for the air box, all is good. I drilled extra holes in mine, but do have the door on. With the door off, you get a ram air effect of a hood scoop. That will give more power, especially at higher speed.

In any case make sure that the airbox drawer screws are in place. It seems to me that the clipping bolts are prone to fall off while riding, although I cannot speak from experience. BTW, I've installed the sponge filter from Unifilter, and when I first started the engine I got plenty of stuttering and low rpm stalling, which should be a good sign as the increased airflow was making the engine running even leaner. The ECU quickly adapted to it, and now it's running pretty much as before, without performing the reset.
