  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

the bike has 380 miles and has the power up kit installed.the bike will start and run for 1-2 minutes then stop.then it will restart fine and run for about 30-40 seconds and stop.then it will run for about 10 seconds and stop.then it will not restart till it sits a little while.we have tried alot of things and have run out of ideas.i will list a few things we have tried, swapped gas tanks, swapped ecu, swapped throttle bodies, swapped coils, swapped out all three relays under the gas tank, swapped out temperature sensor.also have hooked up to ibeat and no failures show up.we have removed coolant and run with rad cap off.valves have been checked and adjusted.we have replaced the battery.i have checked the fi mapping and it is also ok.stumped.your ideas are sought.any one that offers up the fix for this bike will get a free t shirt.thank you, dan.

Have you checked the stator? I heard that they have problems and will allow the bike to run and then suddenly die. Will the bike take any throttle or will it only idle and then die? Have you checked to make sure that you have spark going to the plug or power going to the coil? Check the three things required for the bike to run, Spark, Fuel and Compression. Let us know.

Dan,

Have you determined if it's a ignition or fuel problem?

When it won't start, do you get a good blue spark at the plug? If so, it could still be an ignition timing issue, but I'd look at fuel first.

Do you smell fuel at the exhaust or is the plug wet after cranking without it starting? If so, then ignition is more likely the problem.

Does the cold start (choke) change the symptoms at all? If so, I would start looking for a vacuum leak. Try spraying starter fluid or propane or butane into the intake to see if it prolongs the run time.

WAGs:
Plug wire?
Loose/high-resistance ground on the ECU or other electronics?

Hey Dan, Have you checked spark after the bike dies? Pull the cap immediately and stuff a new plug in it and see if you have spark externally. If you don't I would bet on the stator. My O4 TC 450 is doing the same thing. I talked to George at Uptite and he is leaning towards the stator on mine. But, I got mine real hot after the water pump seal went and almost had a meltdown which could have fried the stator. I am getting funds together for a new stator.

1. Voltage regulator. 2. Spark plug wire. You've already swapped out the other stuff I'd have checked however, one thing that can rarely bite you in the butt is the part you're swapping for troubleshooting is also bad. That can drive you mad...

Edit/PS: You mentioned a tank swap, did that include a different fuel pump with the other tank?

we have swapped a gas tank of a new running bike(hence it has a new fuel pump) and the throttle body off a perfectly running bike.we have installed an ecu from a working bike and a new coil.i t takes throttle and will go fo about 4 blocks then its like you hit the kill switch.then it will fire right back up and you can ride it half as far, then it stops.after a couple sessions it wont start at all...till it sits a little while.

the new coil has a spark plug wire permanently attached to it.we checked the charging system and it was normal so i did not think it would be a bad voltage regulator.we did not swap in a new volt reg tho or the stator,it has not been changed out either.

for what its worth,, I start my bike during the winter every several weeks. Last time, I noticed that the battery was not strong enough to turn it over but did power the fuel pump. It was 10 degrees F outside. I hooked up some jumpers form the bike battery to my PWC battery and started the bike. Pulled the jumpers and the bike ran about 30 seconds and sputtered out. Repeated the same scenario and had a similar issues several times. Even though the battery was not completely fried it would not allow the bike to continue running. If I left the jumpers in place from the pwc battery it ran fine.

Sounds a lot like an issue I had on my jeep (injected LT1). Turned out to be the coil, after testing every possible option, including the coil. A buddy recommended I try a new coil. I was at wits end & thought what the hell, whats another $65.00.

Never had the problem since.

I'm guessing it would cool down enough by the time I removed it to check it & everything looked fine. Soon as it heated up it died.

I see you've already changed that, but the stator or regulator could be experiencing the same issue, parts test fine when cold, fail when hot.:excuseme:

It does sound like a coil or electrical. Something heating up and shorting, like a coil. Same thing as with Ruffus, i had a Dodge Prospector that did the same thing and drove me nuts. was the coil. Might be a voltage reg to as it might go into safe mode at the ECU if it sees to much or to little voltage. Sounds electrical not fuel related.

Hmmmm, I had a Dodge van that had a heat related failure and it was the coil. Dan has replaced the coil so I didn't mention it.
