  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

New Member With A New Bike - Problem Already =(

Got my self a "used" SMR450 2010 with 300km on it..... rode it around a bit, and notice a problem already!!!

There is an oil leak on top of the engine in the middle- looks like it comes in between the cases (I HOPE NOT!)

Its hard to tell, could be under the starter though, is there any common issues like that with this engines? - my first Husky (Had KTMs,CRF,RM,DRZ and couple of Jap Sport bikes so im not too new to the sport)

Wouldreally apreciate if anyone knows for sure of something simple im overlooking here or has any knowladgeable ideas...

thanks =(216759_10150391244210130_517140129_10514644_1595285_n.jpg

Check the valve cover gasket, crank case evac hose coming from the valve cover, and the oil line last. Easiest way, spray the engine with carb cleaner, wash the area real well, start it up & look for the leak. Oil has a way of traveling around an engine making it hard to pinpoint where exactly it's leaking from.
If it doesn't appear from just running in place, take a quick spin up and down your street & look again.

Check all your case bolts 8mm, make sure to torque them to specs
with a inch Pound torque wrench, My new 2010 smr was leaking
a little oil where the two cases match to gather, they don't have a
gasket they are assembled with lock tite on them, I have to
check my torque settings every 500 mile oil change and they work
loose, after i started torquing them down no more oil leak.

Did some more research, and your responce seems to be the trend with this engines....

Will have to torque it down - any recomendation for a good brand torque wrench? I only got big wrenches (50lbs +) (not even sure how acurate they are)

Also, is running Rottela regular (not synthetic) oil been done in this bikes? I run in in my tranny on an 300xcw and thats what I have around, or should I go with the Synthetic?

Thank you guys!

Dimitri-

Like Ruffus posted, check the valve cover gasket first. They sometimes get installed improperly & can leak. If that doesn't solve it, work your way down, bit by bit.
Oil leaks are usually pretty easy to solve on these bikes.

The valve cover was dry, so was the oil line that goes into the airbox.
The entire cylinder is dry and shiny- brand new you can eat of it.

The oil drips down the case covers and seems to have originated around the top near the starter.

That's why the above "tighten the case bolts" post made sense. Hope it solves the issue.

Bike is fun- seat is rough- and I need a bigger rear sprocket to get more snap:)

There is an o-ring that seals the starter too- if you could narrow it down to right around the starter- might be worth checking out- I think I have the same leak but its not effecting oil level or anything enough for me to worry- mine could also be the Countershaft Sprocket seal....I'll probably inspect and change in the off season.

Ohhh yeaa! sweet bike congrats!

Any one know the torque spec for the case bolts? I just went around and "snugged" them up when I noticed mine was leaking. My dealer said it could be the starter O-ring.

Tee-Dub They are 8mm fasteners and they are 5.8 foot pounds
or 69.6 inch pounds. There is one in the front of the motor you can't get
to cause of the frame.

Quick update.
After tightening the 8mm case bolts the leak have seem to stop.

Thanks for the advice.

DEMoN Good deal be sure to check all your bolts every oil change
the motor Mount bolts work loose also don't over tighten any of them
At 2500 miles my case bolts are holding there torque and no oil leaks at all
Live 2 Ride , Ride 2 live.

...also the bolts that hold the starter in place as well as the water pump bolts end inside the motor/trans, oil can and will weep through the threads, I would pull those bolts one at a time and use a small bit of high temp silicone on the threads, it will stop the leaks and keep the bolts tight. I had a similar leak on my '05 when new, I kept thinking it was the starter O-ring, replaced it twice before I found it was just leaking by the threads of the bolts.
