• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Notchy (feeling) bearings?

1. Just pulled the engine on my 81 430 and noticed after I pulled the head and jug that when rolling the clutch basket in neutral by hand, it feels like the bottom end is notchy. It doesn't feel rough, just more like there are dents in a bearing race.

Am I completely missing someting here? I haven't tore into anything else yet, but the feeling reminds me of the way magnets in a brushed electric motor feel.

2. Also, would Halls (or anyone else for that matter) have the driver (P/N 16 11 680-01) for the kickstarter? P/O tried to weld it back up after it rounded off and it didn't work (duh...) So the kicker traveled too far and bent the front screw in the spring holder, broke the boss that it screws into and cracked the top of the case. Oh yeah, they lost the spacer behind that screw somewhere along the way also...

Good thing shes pretty, because if it was a Jap bike, it would have been scattered across eBay by now!!

Check your bearings & kicker paw positioning

Cowboy,
Check your Crank & clutch bearings for play, wiggle the magneto
& the clutch sides. If they move the bearings are shot.

The paw you broke is common problem with 81-84 Huskys, good
thing is all 250 & up 81-89 use the same kicker assy, so you
can find them fairly easy.

Did you crack the center cases or just the left side, if it's
the center , i feel your pain, mine was broke when i bought
my 82 430cr last year. I replaced the entire bottom last
winter, but it's worth it as the 430 cranks.

Check out this document , as it shows the correct positioning
of the kicker paw once you get the replacment parts.

ruwfo, thanks for the pics!! I was wondering if that thing had to be timed in order to keep from eating itsself. The case is just cracked in between the numbers on the top, about an inch long and stops there. Looks like it's been that way for a long time. I can probably salvage the side case, the boss looks like it could be welded up then drilled and tapped.

Motosportz, it may just be the gears meshing, but if it is they really do it with authority!!

One more question. The bore for the kicker through the side case has some wear on it. Has anyone had any luck machining this out big enough to put an Oilite bushing in there?

Make sure you check the crack carefully

Cowboy,

Make sure that's the only crack, because mine was crack behind
the clutch hub too, didn't even see it til i fill the bike with oil &
it leaked under the carb!. Also check the case near where the
clutch cable is mount, mine had a hair line crack there too.

If your's is only cracked in one small spot it should be repairable,
mine wasn't so i replaced the whole bottom end. I planned on
Vintage Motocrossing mine so i didn't need a Micky Mouse repair.

As long as the bushing is machined straight, an Oilite bushing
should work.

OK, I must be feeling the magneto grabbing. Pulled the ignition cover off and it was pretty apparent what I was feeling then. Thats a load off, the bearings everywhere else felt tight and it looks like the bottom end has been torn into once. That would make sense because its on its first overbore, piston is stamped 86.43mm and has hardly any carbon on it.

Now to get the side cover fixed and I can button the engine back up.
