  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil Check Bolt

No need to be sorry Dave...this thread stripping issue is a common problem with the earlier bikes with oil check hole....:banghead:

your bikes are both newer versions that have a sight glass.....

Thanx Troy,

I just didn't catch onto the beginning of the thread...:excuseme:
It's not the first time....:D
I thought Mercury had a stripped out Drain bolt not an Check bolt.
(See what happens when you don't read the whole story.) Opps
I sure one of my Grammar teachers said that a few times:lol::lol::lol::D

Sounds good to me w/the exception of tapping the thread in-place. I'd remove the whole cover before I ran a tap through. Maybe that's a little overkill but then you would be sure that no metal shavings got in the motor.
But if your just going to JB weld it in place anyway you don't have to go through all that. Just use the same bolt and goop it in there. A few thousand miles and mines happily still holding up! I just checked and I actually used quick steel not JB. I chose it because it filled the void in the missing threads better.
However you should go buy a good tap and die set  Any excuse is a good excuse to buy tools!

And a shameless plug for the Skyda cover... It's a beautiful addition to the bike! Old school / Classic logo (which I happen to dig) or not it's one of the best things I have put on the bike....

Thanks for the feedback.

Mebbe I will just JB Weld/QS the old bolt in - taking the cover off seems a royal PIA. I may still get he tap and die set because....well just because :D

Def getting the Skyda cover. Gonna order it as soon as I figured out what color to get....so that will be Friday then :applause:

I don't use the drain bolt anymore either. I just keep adding oil...kidding.

Not kidding:

The drain bolt is weak too.

I just drain the oil by removing the side filters and leaning the bike over.

A tad messy, but not as messy as a stripped drain bolt.

Cheers

+1 :applause: I do the same thing. Works great and no worries about stripping the bolt.

Well that's interesting. I'll bear that in mind if (when ) I strip the oil drain bolt  I've never had a problem with that bolt aside from forgetting pretty much every time that it's a star bolt and not a straight allen bolt.

A couple things. I changed my oil , first time, on Sunday. Removing the drain plug and the double strainers, I grabbed a light to check out the motor innards thru the strainers hole. I guess I was surprised how close the two are and that they're not isolated by a "wall". I'd never remove the drain plug again if not for having to clean the magnet of metal.

As removing the side cover is so easy, I'd just do it for complete assurance the threading jobs proper.

Don't even bother to re thread it if the plan is to replace.

Last, I'm surprised no one suggested re threading to a 1/8" tapered pipe thread. Might be controversial but for some applications they are superior, .... like this small check hole. Only drawback is the need to reapply thread sealer after each 'check'. 1/8" NPT would work nicely.

Dave

EDIT: no pictures...just issues with the "poster". He-he.

I set a personal record today and figured out what color cover to get a day ahead of schedule :applause:

Cover on the way, JB weld primed and ready.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback

Fitted the cover on Saturday (left the oil in just put the bike on it's side for 10 mins to let the oil drain - no mess at all when I took the cover off) and JB welded the bolt in.

Rode yesterday for the first time this year. Both the cover and the bolt were perfect

Sounds great. probably what I'll if and when my bolt strips out. I've always liked the features of a sight glass. Just about all my Kawasakis have had them.
