  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil leak out of one of the valve cover bolts?

Husqvarna
B Class
2008 510 SMR. 2600 miles. I am starting to notice that oil is leaking out of the valve cover. I assumed when I checked the valves last time, i didn't tighten down the 4 bolts in a criss-cross pattern and that was the issue. So I cleaned the bike really good the other day and drained the oil. Pulled the valve cover to check the valves and inspect the gasket. the gasket looks fine, I checked the valves, cleaned the gasket really good, and re-installed everything......tightening the cover down in a criss-cross pattern. Topped off the oil and took her out for a 25 mile twisty road spin to ensure everything is proper for tomorrow's track day. After the ride, I still noticed oil weeping down the front of the head, especially on the left hand side (sitting on the bike). Further inspection shows that the oil is actuallt leaking from around the front left 8mm shouldered bolt that holds the valve cover on......I searched and did not find any one else that has had this issue. The rubber grommet's inside the bolt holes on the valve cover looked good too before re-assembly. What can I do to remedy this? It's not that big of a deal, but I do not like leaky bikes if there is a possibility of fixing it. Any help is appreciated..

To stop the oil from leaking you will need to replace the valve cover bolt grommets and it would not be a bad idea to replace the valve cover gskt also.
Even though the gaskets and grommets look fine, they rely on thier thickness to provide a proper seal, as you noticed the valve cover bolts are shouldered so they will only allow the gasket and grommets to be preloaded a certain amount. with time they squash down and don't allow adequate pressure to be placed on them.
Cheers

RTV**************************************** slap some on and ride the hell out of it at the track tomorrow  a dab under the cover gasket and a dab under the grommits.

What track ya goin to?

Thanks for the replies. I will probably put some RTV on there like JR said, and order the new grommets for future valve checks. JR, track was at Summit Point, West Virginia. Had a blast!

dont use sealer on the VC gasket itself. they are infintely reuseable like the clutch/case cover gasket is, husky uses killer gaskets! new grommet is in order. no big. RTV might slow it down some for one day if ya get it spotless. keep all that goopy crap on the outside of the engine. dont overtoruqe or *snap!*. them gormmets last a good long time. use a punched out section of bicycle innertube once to get by in a crunch on another brand.
