Did a major clean up of the bike today and came away concerned. Bike runs great so that's not a problem, but ran into some weird stuff. For one thing, it was really dirty under the plastic. I am a bit anal about taking care of my machines but this looks like it has been submerged. That telltale grit you get around bolt holes when you've been in a deep mud hole...
Also came across a few mismatched screws. Could be nothing but it always bothers me when someone putting the bike back together didn't use the right screw.
Someone already did an airbox mod. Seems to be the 3D printer mod but the little frame is broken. Not even sure how to get that air filter out.
The rear wheel has what looks like an ABS ring but I'm guessing that might be a hall sensor ring for a speedometer pickup?
There was a good bit of oil-dirt spooge on the inside of the front frame downtube and on the bottom of the radiator and charcoal canister. Looks like someone missed the oil fill hole...
The clutch cable has gotten between the radiator and the frame. Not even sure how it's supposed to be routed but it's worn through the plastic sheathing. It works fine but needs to be replaced. And rerouted. Anyone care to share where it's supposed to go?
A PO did a "Cold Start" mod leaving a microswitch at the end of a wire exposed. I don't know where it goes and I don't know what it does.
I did get the Safari tanks off and the stock panels all back on and in place. The bike looks great and runs great, but when I got it all back together that little snowflake symbol on the dash was blinking. I was in my garage and it was about 70 degrees so I don't know what that's all about.
I hope owning this bike isn't just going to be this kind of crap all the time. Sort of has me bummed about the whole experience and I haven't even really gotten to ride it yet. I'm really careful about my motorcycle purchases. I do a lot of research, gather a lot of opinions, and vet my sellers pretty rigorously. Might have messed up this time.
1. Grit - My bike gets dirty because I ride it. I suspect it has been ridden, just sayin
2. Mismatched screws? Why is that a concern? It's fastened for now. In the mean time, if this bothers you order the right screws/bolts/nuts and install them. Done.
2A. There are parts blow ups in the ADV Thread index and a LOT of parts cross reference to BMW parts. For instance"Husky" part #12324A will likely cross reference to "BMW" #1234A. This isn't always the case (think bike specifics, plastics, wheels, etc) but has been proven. Check the ADV OEM OEM/Interchangeable parts listings.
3. ABS Ring, yes speedo.
4. Oil fill hole? Could be oil slobber (blow back) from the crankcase vent filter. Yes, they do get a bit messy, clean it when you clean the pod filter it's just regular maintenance. Remove the seat, remove the top screws on the left side plastic, remove the four screws in the air box lid (from the modded removable portion), lean the left side plastics out, lift the lid off, loosen the hose clamp that holds the pod, remove the pod, clean the filter with Dawn detergent, dry, oil with filter oil, reverse the removal process. Takes about ten minutes once you've done it. Clean the crankcase filter/vent while you have the lid off.
5. Route the clutch cable up the left side and be done with it once and for all.
6. "Cold Start" Mod? Likely the switch for switching between hot and cold temperatures from a "Booster Plug" installation. Check out the TR "thread index" under "spoofers".
7. Snow flake symbol is the Booster Plug trying to spoof the ECU into believing that it is 20* colder than ambient. Check the micro switch and set to the hot setting (two options, "Hot & Cold"). Be advised that AIT spoofers don't work well with the TR. They are "learned" and negated by the Magnetti Marelli ECU which then reverts back to the stock fuel trim.
8. Quit worrying, it's a rotax engine. Venerable, proven and nearly bullet proof. Clean the bike up to your liking and go ride it, quit worrying and in the mean time read the thread index and parts interchange list.
My bike now has 29K on it. Two valve checks (why twice? because I had the bike down for winter maintenance twice), no adjustments needed to date (this is likely is not the norm). Your valve clearances may vary. Get familiar with the thread index and you will have answers to most of your questions. It is a good resource built from many threads in the ADV Stupid questions thread.
